Philosophy vs Religion

I never said that they were same but they are highly similar. And the difference between them is that philosophy is basic truth while science gives more detail and evolves. By the way, a philosophies are more like theories and as I know of any theory can be tested in some form of fashion.

I'm not sure that these two are mutually exclusive. Buddhism is a religious and philosophical system, to give an example. Quite frankly, I might even go as far as to say that religion itself is a type of philosophy, except while philosophy is, for the most part, used to describe a secularly based system, religion tends to have a deity (or lack thereof) associated with it. Philosophy in the Webster Dictionary is described as "the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group". Religion has this as well and is defined as "a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices", something very similar to the definition of philosophy. To sum it all up, instead of saying whether or not you have to believe a philosophy is more "right" than religion, I think your question is more of whether atheism is better than a theistic religion, and should be phrased as such.

People are getting to picky about the details about the mechanics in what the OP is saying. Just answer the dang question.

Persoanlly, I prefure philosiphy over religion, since I believe that religion tells a person what to do, rather than what philosiphy does, which is make you think on the plossible situation given, and really think about the choices, both moral and emotional. You can really see the gray within the topics when you question what your societies morals may say. I found where you think out your answers, the possible origins, or the very mechanics of our world could give you a very new insight on how you may view things.

Philosophy seems less evil and doesent say that there is an invisible guy who watches us. Besides even if there is a god, he does a crappy job.

Philosphy usually makes me think about the world and myself.

I personally fell that religion is better, because philosophy is thought up by man, and man, no matter how much they argue, know nothing. The smartest man in the world only knows a nth of an nth to the 100th power of everything in the world. Religion, is believing in someting that is omnipitant, that knows all. I would much rather put my faith in the arms of a higher power, than in the arms of old dead guys who think of good quotes.

I would like to explain something too , philosophy mean "love of wisdom" , philosophy is the search of real truth and religion is the complete oposite , it gives you truth based on faith (no real evidence) . So please stop saying that religion has anything to do with philosophy or that you can be a religious philosopher that's totaly absurd ...

That religion has much to do with philosophy, and vice-versa, is a fact. If philosophy is the search of truth, then religiousness would fall inside it, defined as search of truth through the lenses of a higher being.

Yes, both follow very different lines of thought, but by their aim, and perhaps even by their origin, they are very much related.

Nonononononononononononono and no . You don't understand what is a religion . A religion doesn't take "god exists" as a premise , people don't "assume" that god exists , they believe that he does . Religion doesn't ask how the univers has been created , god created it . Religion doesn't ask what is good or what is evil , god said what is good and evil . Religion doesn't make you think on what is the best way to live your life , god says how to live your life . Religion forces the truth on you with no evidence (based on faith) , philosophy tells you that everything that has no evidence to support it , you should question it . Religion is an answer , philosophy is a question .

I think philosophy can be related to religion and religion to philosophy.. but religion cannot be based on a philosophy while philosophy can be based on a religion.

There are no winners really. But because religion has turned into such a business i would have to choose philosophy. The key is to take the philosophical value of a religion or religious text and distance yourself from the image or material aspects of a particular religion. i dont really know where i am going with this.. but take evangelists for example they are milking religion and faith for every penny it got, and that is no longer religion in my opinion thats just marketing and sly business.

Religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and to a certain extent islam, which closely linked to philosophical beliefs tend to stray away from that path and remain more of a religion, and not so much a marketing strategy.

I guess Philosophy wins v religion, because modern religion is just a scam, just another reason for us to go to the mall and buy presents.

I prefer to believe in philosophy as it deals with the decisions of people, not of an all knowing, all seeing idol, created out of fear, for worship.
If any kind of thinking will lead us to explain our own existence it will be philosophy of the heart and mind, not through the mis-translated teaching of lost civilizations and peoples. The beliefs back then worked for them, and although they make some people feel good now, it is not what we should use to define ourselves or our existence. Belief in a god is fine. However do not through yourself foolishly into the embrace of someone or something you do not and can not fully comprehend, and expect it to tell you that you were meant to 'do this' or 'be that'. Words in a book are meant to assist in our own PERSONAL idealization of our own realities and worlds. We may all live on one planet, but upon this one measly small ass planet, is 7 billion realities, coexisting and interacting on a daily basis. Some end, and some a re create, and other recreated anew. However much you wish for an answer to life, it will never be easy, and likely never be found until the point of death, and, at that point, you will either understand and be at peace, or you will fall into your everlasting rest in anguish and hate. Either way, the last moments in life are precious, and should not be thrown towards idols of worship, whether false or true, but towards friends, family, and community, so in order to be at peace with oneself when your time is up, and not have any regrets upon an action you do today, tomorrow.
