Still not that surprising though. Weak minds will believe just about anything if it's served properly and when it eventually fails, they look for the next hottest shit around. Besides the basis for it isn't that far from typical self-suggestion techniques. Your mental disposition does sometimes influence the effectiveness of other treatments but won't do much on it's own.
As far as manipulating DNA is concerned. Sure - if done properly it could probably change you into a pink, flying elephant or whatever. The thing is, the currently researched methods involve administering pinpoint doses of specific-wavelength radiation and this can lead to all sorts of 'fun' side effects.

Yeah. In it's current state it's pretty worthless but they managed to turn alchemy into chemistry so there's hope yet.
