Violence merely makes the child frusturated and desiring payback. Thus, he woud study less and behave worse. At least that is how I responded after reciving "discipline".
I must say, though, considering this is something that occurred throughout my community and I myself included, was raised in this type of setting, that though it does leave one frustrated, because, especially in Asia, because it is so common, we consider it our form of punishment. Honor is a big thing for Asia and you screwing up is the same as your entire family fucking up. I can't really say that this type of punishment is perfect, but it creates discipline and to an extent, a drive to change, to excel, and a bunch of other things that aren't easy to translate from Asiatic languages to English. I don't believe that being beaten is to inspire fear, though it often happens, but to humiliate the one being beaten.
And also, this isn't specific to East vs. West but more like Old World vs. New World. I can personally account that at times the punishment did make me resentful and to an extent is why I still am a chuunibyou, for the reason that I wanted to break out of my settings. But from this, I believe I learned that a disciplined behavior can be much more useful and productive than one who simply was "grounded" and lost material things for some time. Then again, its lateand I could be ranting random crap right now.
