Personally, I think it's a bit silly. Well, I wouldn't mind not smoking in kids' playgrounds, school areas, etc. But public restaurants? Pubs? Cafe? Tram stops? You've got to be kidding me.
Although I'm not a smoker and don't like having to breathe and be around smokers, I think this is a major violation of personal liberty.
People should have their own right to smoke in most public places if they choose to. I can see why banning smoking near playgrounds and bus stops are acceptable since smoking there actively pollutes the air around others, but banning it in all places isn't right.
Regarding the part where government taxes tobacco, I have mixed feelings. A pack of 20 costs around $7.50 here in Washington state, which is insane compared to some other states. As a libertarian, I disagree that the government should be able to tax it. However, I also dislike cigarettes personally.
