Too Pure to Fap To? A Philosophical Look Into Attraction.

Pic related. I just can't. Some might say hell's yes and go to town but I just can't. It's not about Miku not being attractive because she in my opinion is beautiful, but I just don't seem to find her sexually attractive. Let me explain. If you were to show me that very same picture of Miku over a year ago before I knew of her and what she represents I would say "damn that's hot" and want to fap to it. But now knowing what I know I can’t do it. I don’t consider her a "waifu" but I look at her as more of a muse. It’s a little hard to explain, but I knew the music before I knew the face. For a lack of words I was almost stunned with all the art that's out there of her and how she has her own subculture of fans. But this wasn’t love if you could call it anything it was more admiration an enjoyment of sorts with her and what she represents. Psychical attraction never crossed my mind, although I agree with myself that she is attractive. Lurking on /a/ I see this from time to time but it then dwindles down into fetishes, loli and so on but I would like this to be about adult characters and feel free to interpret “adult” on your own. So is there something that I’m just not getting or do other people also have this sexual attraction "block"? And if so what are the characteristics and reasons that stop you?

For me, the answer's yes, but history's shown that the more pure something/someone is, the more man feels the need to dirty it. It's like we can't, or don't want to fathom perfection.

This got me thinking of this titular character from a few anime seasons ago, Kobato. I've never seen the anime, and I don't think it's well-known, but apparently this character is pure. So pure that the one explicit image of her on danbooru is in the Rule 34 pool, and half the comments state they can't fap to it.

It's like the different connotations the words sexy, hot, pretty, and beautiful have. They all refer to the same thing--how attractive a woman is. You can fap to someone that's sexy or hot. But someone that's pretty or beautiful? The innocent girl next door? Meh. I can't do it.

I think this is reasonable SD fare, so long as people approach it in the right way.

Pure in the sense of images or character? It's an interesting choice of words. As long as a picture is sexually provocative, even if not intentionally, people can fap to it. The affecting forces are in character and memories. I've played a whole lot of Zelda games, but you never get a much more complex picture than the deceptively strong and regal princess, and that is workable in fantasy, if limiting to reasonable and fitting (happy, or where I could otherwise imagine Link storming in as saviour) scenarios. I cannot though, for instance, personally fap to Shirley from Code Geass given her rather traumatic storyline. Tragic characters are a tough one across the board.

Ultimately I think it's down to individual tastes, morals and opinions. Purity could be a barrier in some instances, as demonstrated, but it is equally open to the fantasy of subversion. There are other characteristics and associations which would, however, hinder me personally.

I can understand the idea of finding something so pure that your spiritual attraction towards it would be greater than the sexual/physical attraction. However, I don't see why you'd not want to fuck since there's no reason to not have physical, as well as spiritual pleasure all together. It's like saying: "I love my gf/wife too much to fuck her". It's just not ok. In my opinion, you can only achieve a full sense of satisfaction if you indulge both pleasures.

In the case of 2D, yeah, I've come across this feeling. However, I can fap to it no problem, but only if certain conditions are met.

The only example I can give is Nagisa from Clannad. I can fap no problem to doujins with her(which are few), but only if it's happy sex between her and Tomoya. I can still fap to doujins of her and the rest of the characters getting banged, etc, but I feel kinda awkward and guilty afterwards, for a few minutes. :D

Getting back on topic, we do not have to limit the discussion to fictional characters; we can relate to reality too. Although there are plenty of incest-related stories, I doubt most of us can pleasure ourselves when we see a sexy image of our family members.

I've come across this feeling before. I see it more as an odd mix of respect and some other feeling that I can't describe (very specific, I know). I can fap to those characters, but I feel unsatisfied once I'm done. As if I did something that I wasn't supposed to but still did it. It's hard to explain but that's how it is. I don't come across it very often but when I do, I do question why this is so.

Yeah I know what you mean as something similar happens to me as well. For example, I just can't fap to Nagisa or Kotomi from Clannad, or Nami and Nico Robin from One Piece among others. Most likely is due to their stories in some cases and in others because they are just too innocent to fap to. It's weird but it happens.

You're by no means alone in that sentiment, dude. Nunnally is the one character that I cannot jerk to, I'd feel like such a horrible person to do so.

Main reason why would be an emotional attachment. How it comes about differs from person to person, but the most common would be if you watched/read whatever series said character is from. Like any good story, the characters become real to you.

And in these particular cases, the characters usually end up having some awful, terrible, and tragic thing happen/has happened to them, and you just wanna comfort them more than anything else, no matter how dayum sexay they are.

I mean- sure- you'd want to jump their bones and ravish them in all manner of ways, but it would probably only cause them more distress, and so you can't bring yourself to have any impure thoughts about them.

It's all rather silly, but hey- our brains do weird-ass shit sometimes.

I've found myself unable to fap to most yuri, characters from Strawberry Panic,Himeko & Chikane from Kannazuki no Miko and any works by Toweringman. There's a sacrilegious feeling when one faps to lesbians or women with no known interest in males. I've come to look at certain yuri as something sacred.

I see what most of you are saying, but in this situation there is no back-story. There is no need to feel sorry for her and want to comfort her or feel any need to help. On that note, there is no story period. I’m sure because there isn’t one you could imagine something but for this purpose no, there is nothing. There’s also the issue that the voice is computer generated, there is no voice actress to associate with or human presence. In the pictures she’s a robot/cyborg but let’s say that that’s irrelevant for the moment. To have a character such as Miku put before me with no back-story, where everything about her is artificial it just leaves me a little confused, kind of sort of. To throw a wrench into this whole attempt to justify it I enjoy the hentai of Luka. So ultimately there is no justification, and that has been what's bothering me.

Anyways,in this particular case, I'd suppose that you just find that she looks too innocent. A lot of the songs and music videos enforce this idea. Actually, each one does provide some form of a story for her.

I'm really just takin' stabs in the dark, but I think that may have something to do with your feelings toward Miku.

Hell- the fact that she is artificial may in itself be a factor, stirring fathoms of the whole Pinocchio concept (wanting to be real) in which you sympathize for her. Who knows.

As for my personal barriers on sexuality, I can't stand the thought of having sex with a girl I'm [fairly sure I'm] in love with. My family has never been sexually arousing to me, nor my close friends. And personally, I don't masturbate to half the doujins I read.

Sorry I'm having a hard time trying to convey what my topic is, and it's also one that can be interpreted in a few different ways. Am I specifically saying is Miku too pure to fap to? No. I want to have a discussion on what is attractive and also (if people are willing) who and why they are too pure to fap to. Yes, I now see that it varies from person to person, but if people are willing to justify there reasons or try to explain it the best they can, we can have a conversation on it. You can see it was going well even though you protested to this being in SD from the start, and rightfully so, perhaps this wasn’t the best place for this thread. I agree that all the replies have been great and I want them to continue. What I was adding in my 2nd post was that Miku is completely artificial with no real back-story and how I had no real justification. But again this thread is not Miku specific. The responses again have been great and I like how people have posted there reasons. Now that we're posting our reasons why let’s respectfully discuss them. Let me start.

I have a theory that the phenomenon being described in this thread might be related to the Madonnna/whore complex that most men have to differing degrees. We tend to want to group women into different categories: one being a hussy that we can pump and dump and the other being this loving, motherly figure that we want to nurture or protect. A lot of guys will talk about whether a girl is 'wifey' material or not and make a distinction between a girl they just want to boink and someone that would actually want a serious relationship with. I have a friend that has issues with having rough, dominant sex with his girlfriend despite his girlfriend having told him that she wants him to be more dominant. I asked him to explain why and he said he didn't want to treat her like a whore.

For me, personally, it's really hard to decide what's pure and what's not. Most of the time, I fap first and think later, but I do happen upon that one image that I just don't want to fap to, but just stare at it forever. Strange. We all have something we don't want to fap to, even if we find it attractive. There's a difference between beauty and sexiness, and how we perceive them. Some people choose to fap to beauty rather than sexiness, because it is their choice and personal taste. Some people just can't stand seeing their favorite anime character getting raped by fat, old men even if its very sexy.

Hmmmmm a question I never really thought about. Can a person fictional or not be so pure in our eyes that we cannot cheapen them down for our own pleasure?

For me I think that would be a no. Even in the most striking female characters who have a very deep complex characters which I can sympathize with I find a way too cheapen down for my use. Granted I don't take pride in said fact but men have their needs just like any mammal on this planet. Although actually, the only case's where I could say yes to this would have to be in cases of loli. There have been many sexy young females in a lot of anime I watch but I just cant ever bring myself to every use them for any fantasy. Maybe its because of the certain amount of very fetish people who obsess with loli that I've seen or maybe it the fact I feel like a bad person if I were to commit to such thoughts.

But I think pure in this case it can mean something your not willing to fap on the basis of good moral's.
