Putting myself in the shoes of those living in famine hit countries, I would think these people are willing to give everything up, maybe with the exception of their family, houses and water, just to obtain food. Although the media may not always be trustworthy, victims of disaster-hit areas are always rushing for rations when they arrive.
Then again, in the first place, they have nothing much to give up, in contrast to the material possessions we have in our everyday lives.
