a touhou 12.3 question

this may be a post lacking intelligence, but I got touhou 12.3 in april and played it non-stop with my fellow anime club members until I got out for the summer. since then I havent touched it and am starting to get major withdrawl lol. My question is this:
I would usually play against my friend with my laptop linked to his laptop with that input IP address thingy that the game has. What I wanna know is that IP link gaming restricted to LAN and direct connect or can you basically input any IP address and play against someone?

Its better if its LAN since there is no lag.If IP link,it would experience some lag,when I mean IP link and lag,I am refering to you and your friend is in 2 different places,since the game uses IP link anyway to connect players.
I am curious though,who do you use most of the time?
