The hugely anticipated Ace Attorney Investigations is finally out in English! I just finished the game and totally loved it.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is very similar to the other Ace Attorney games, with investigation phases and cross-examination phases. You play as Miles Edgeworth, the genius prosecutor everyone loves from the main series.
Investigation
Investigation consists of collecting evidence from the crime scene, examining it and then examining the crime scene itself. Evidence and profiles are filed in the Organizer, and information on the crime scene is then examined by using "logic".
During the investigation players can either use the stylus on the touch screen or use the D-Pad for movement and controlling Edgeworth. When the player collides with an examinable object or an NPC, they can either touch a "Talk"/"Check" button or press the "A" button.
Logic
A core investigation element in Gyakuten Kenji's gameplay is "Logic". This mode consists of examining and linking important factors or curious clues found in various crime scenes in order to answer any questions which appear during investigations.
For example, the player may be asked to determine why a crime was committed in a particular room, and will have to point to clues about both the nature of the room and the crime scene in order to establish these facts. If players incorrectly link two unrelated factors they take damage from a life bar (similar to being penalized in the Ace Attorney series). If this bar reaches zero, it's game over. If the information retrieved in this mode is correct, it is then turned into evidence.
Rebuttals
Rebuttals are similar to cross-examinations in the Ace Attorney series. Rebuttals are confrontations between characters that consist of discussing the results of an investigation. These confrontations may lead to new information being revealed, or even a confession from the murderer.[3] Like cross-examinations, the player can press the witness for more information or present evidence that contradicts their logic. Mistakes made when presenting evidence causes damage to your health bar.
Plot:
In "Turnabout Visitor" (逆転ã®æ¥è¨ªè€… Gyakuten no RaihÅsha?), Buddy Faith's corpse is found in Edgeworth's office and Edgeworth decides to investigate it. Prosecutor Jacques Portsman appears, and accuses Gumshoe of murdering Buddy Faith. Maggey Byrde and Winston Payne make an appearance.
In "Turnabout Airlines" (逆転エアライン Gyakuten Earain?), during a flight Miles Edgeworth and flight attendant Rhoda Teneiro discover the dead body of Akbey Hicks, a Borginian in the plane's elevator and Edgeworth is treated as the culprit. The events of this case take place before case 1. Sal Manella and Franziska Von Karma make an appearance.
In "The Kidnapped Turnabout" (ã•ã‚‰ã‚れる逆転 Sarawareru Gyakuten?), which follows "Turnabout Airlines", Edgeworth goes to "Gatewater Land", an amusement park themed around the mascots of the Police Department, the Blue Badger and Pink Badger, in order to pay the ransom for the kidnapped son of an old friend. He is ambushed from behind after making the payment and meets Kay Faraday, a thief, who helps him escape. Agent Shi-Long Lang, an investigator, is introduced in this chapter, as well as several returning characters such as Mike Meekins, Wendy Oldbag and Ema Skye.
"Turnabout Reminiscence" (éŽãŽåŽ»ã‚Šã—逆転 Sugisarishi Gyakuten?) is set 7 years before the first case, where Edgeworth was still starting out as a prosecutor, and he meets his mentor Manfred von Karma, as well as a young Franziska von Karma, a young Kay Faraday and the Judge.
In "Turnabout Ablaze" (燃ãˆä¸ŠãŒã‚‹é€†è»¢ Moeagaru Gyakuten?), Kay Faraday is accused of murdering a man in a burned-down building. There is also a convention about the Pink Princess and Steel Samurai. Notable characters include Larry Butz, Lotta Hart, and Mask DeMasque II. Wendy Oldbag also appears in the game once more and the Jammin' Ninja also makes an appearance.
The game was very enjoyable, and I loved the new investigation system. I think all of you Ace Attorney fans need to go and grab a copy right now. Despite being a spin-off, its plot, characters and everything is top class, and doesn't lose to any of the Ace Attorney games.
The only complaint I have is that the game was too easy, but that's to be expected with Edgey's intellect. :D They also left room for a sequel, much to my delight.
Have you guys played it yet? Discuss this amazing work below!
