drawing of the character pop up when they speak or when you see them on the menu. It made sense on the SNES-era and PS1-era RPGs because the character models/sprites were so basic. Now that they're very detailed and "lifelike", it makes absolutely no sense for them to be represented by a drawing. The CG artwork will at least actually look like their models look (though are still totally pointless in the dialogue boxes since you can see their faces anyway).
True, but in this particular game I think the Anime pics would have gone better. I mean the game screams anime at every turn. Have you read Lymle's Dictionary entry? Introduced Bacchus to Welch? Hell, introduced Welch to ANYONE?
Just as an aesthetic choice, I think it would have worked better, and probably is in Japan. Especially since only the major cutscenes seem to have a lot of facial expression on the actual model.
