But Xbox360 (and other consoles for the matter) aren't portable CD players.

CD players were made with assumption that they can move a lot when carried by a person, being stuck in a backpack, pocket etc.
Xbox360 and similar consoles aren't intended to be portable in a way that you're *NOT* expected to move them when you play something...in fact, I have no idea why anyone would do that, considering that current-gen consoles are rather large.
I'm also pretty confident that if I flipped my computer around, it's DVD player would likewise scratch disc, or wouldn't work.
And I'm assuming that the insides of these things are packed so tight that it's hard to add anymore system/hardware functions, if they're anything like computers (especially those compact ones).

ok that isn't true. the technology has been around forever to protect the disk from scratches on the move.(portable CD players of the 1900s)That is only because the disc snaps into position. Now as for arguing as to why or why not Microsoft chose to do that is a separate argument altogether.
