Is Carmageddon Set For a Triumphant Return?

Now if this isn’t freaky... I don’t know what is... but earlier, if you happened to catch our lovely piece on the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade vehicle combat games, I had a moment where I delved into my childhood and recalled the delightful memories that surrounded my time with Carmageddon.
By some bizarre act of nature, it appears as if Square Enix have resurrected the Carmageddon website and slapped a timer on it, counting down to June 1st. You know, a week before E3 kicks off.
What that quite means yet, we don't know, but usually when a publisher slaps a timer on a website, there is a game announcement imminent. Stay tuned folks.
And yes, Square Enix still owns the Carmageddon URL.
Maybe it is the end of the world tomorrow after all...

Stainless Games has announced that it's set to paint the town red with Carmageddon: Reincarnation, meaning that the developer behind the original Carmageddon and Carmageddon: Carpocalypse Now has reacquired the rights to the vehicular combat franchise, returning to its indie roots for a long overdue return to the controversial title.
"Carmageddon has returned to its Indie developer roots, and the time is right to bring the game to a new audience,” said Patrick Buckland, CEO and Stainless co-founder. “Originally an ambitious title that tested the hardware limits of its day, we’re excited that the game will finally get the showcase it deserves on today’s platforms.”
“Carmageddon: Reincarnation will feature the same black humour and comic violence that made the original game such a success.” said Neil Barnden, Executive Director and Stainless co-founder. “All the laughs, the crazy power-ups, and extreme destruction will return. We will make sure the existing fans get what they want and expect from a Carmageddon game, and a new generation discovers the delights of sliding into a Cunning Stunt.”
“I was in the war!” Buckland added.
Carmageddon: Reincarnation is currently in the early stages of pre-production, Stainless Games is on the lookout for a publishing partner, with a view to releasing the game for download in 2012. Whether that plan will extend to the Xbox Live Arcade has not yet been confirmed, but Stainless would be mad not to bring Carmageddon: Reincarnation to XBLA next year.
