I was extremely skeptical about this game at first. It’s a difficult task trying to live up to what I consider the best game I’ve ever played. This game is not better than the original, or as good, but it sure comes fucking close. This game definitely brings a lot of shit to the table: huge immersive environments with attention to detail and people that act like people (someone you can empathize with/feel for), a good story with an ending that not only assured the player of the importance of their mission but presents the player with choices that challenge them on an intellectual level and have worldwide implications, smooth gameplay, and most importantly, a character that I don’t fucking hate. I didn’t really hate Alex D., but I did think he was an uncool faggot who I would’ve traded any day to get back the totally cool, non-faggot JC Denton. After Invisible War left its “universal ammo” feces on the Deus Ex name, this game cleaned that shit right up, bringing back normal god damn ammo and the cool weapon mod system the original game had (IW had a horrible one), and a wider selection of augmentations. Speaking of which, this game just combined skills and augs. I can tolerate letting go of the skill system in the original game for the XP system in this one.
This main character is chill. He may speak like JC, but he does show emotion and has a personality (not to imply JC didn’t have one). I love how the developers added a conversation system into this game (the shops were a nice extra). It reminded me of games like Mass Effect and Fallout 3 where one can investigate further and gather information. I’m the type of person who loves to gather information, so the e-mails and newspapers were a pleasant sight. The developers made the game extra awesome by giving details on anything one happens to pick up and examine and bullshit explanations about how the augmentations function. The hacking was also awesome, and it is way more engaging than the hacking in the original game, which was fucking boring. I enjoyed the wide array of weaponry and the detail the developers put into them. Since on my first run I was going stealthy, I didn’t carry any heavy assault equipment on me. I carried a stun gun, revolver, tranq. rifle, and a fully pimped out pistol. The combat in this game is way more complex and fun than in the original, but the cinematic takedowns were just fucking weird. Try doing it with another enemy (one you’re not engaging) on screen and you’ll see what I mean. The whole aiming down iron sights thing makes this game feel like a proper fps. I can understand the necessity for the 3rd person cover system since it would be overkill to have to peek out just to get the gist of what’s going on around you. This is because peeking out is a good way to get shot. Also, it’s interesting how 100 HP is only half your health, so the (slow) health regeneration doesn’t make it
that convenient for the player.
This game may not be Killzone or Crysis 2, but the graphics didn’t suck. Nothing was taken away from my experience just because some objects weren’t as detailed as others. I remember complaining about the highlights and the on-screen objective indicator, but they can be turned off; if you play on “Give Me Deus Ex” mode, I believe they are automatically turned off for you, showing that the developers do understand that the original game did not hold the player’s hand. The animations were a bit weird and lip sync was off sometimes, but that’s just trivial shit. The main problem I have with this game is that it fucks up continuity. The world is very advanced and there plenty of things that are more high tech than what we were shown in the future (i.e., the original Deus Ex). While DX had normal books, Human Revolution had e-books that look like a piece of glass. While DX had newspapers, HR had news on some black electronic shit that looks as thin as a sheet of paper. In HR you put in a code on a touch pad, while in DX you have to press buttons. Where did all this great technology go?
I’m not sure yet since I haven’t gotten my hands on Skyrim, but so far this is the best game to have come out this year. I give this motherfucker a 9.5/10. This is mostly because the ending(s) wasn’t (weren’t) as epic as the original’s. I didn’t really feel much here, whereas the original’s endings were emotionally impacting and beautiful, made especially epic by a philosophical quote right after the final cinematic. (It was all dramatic and shit.)
Edit: I forgot about the music. Deus Ex had the best original soundtrack ever. Human Revolution had dick. It only plays a track during cutscenes and firefights. Other than that, there's a little whisper of music in the background. Fucking lame. The only good track this game has going for it is Icarus.
tl;dr? You're a faggot who should stop skipping the end credits.
TIME FOR SPOILERS
As for the endings:
I chose the self-destruct ending for the fuck of it, but after seeing the other three I’m feeling that this was the best choice. Fuck sending Darrow’s message. If letting everyone in the world know the truth means the hindrance of scientific and technological progress just because people’s minds are blown by how some faggot decided to abuse it, then fuck the truth. Choosing to destroy the facility also makes it so that I am not responsible for pushing a certain agenda in the message. Manipulating the world with what I want people to see as the truth using the tired justification of “I’m doing what’s best for humanity” is not the right thing to do. Who the fuck am I to push my values on the rest of the world just because I personally believe it would be good? It's the whole "I know what's good for you better than you do" bullshit. That’s a lot of influence in the hands of a few (since the pro-aug ending would have me working with Sarif and possibly other corporations, while the anti-aug ending would have me work with Taggart and I guess what’s left of the Illuminati). By destroying Darrow’s mindfuck machine and the rest of the facility, I am neither telling the truth, nor am I misrepresenting it. I am simply withholding it. The world will have no answers for what just happened, but the people will be free to continue as things were, without being given a predetermined path. There would no doubt be those who manufacture their own truth of what happened for their own agenda, but at least it won’t be through the world propaganda machine that is Eliza Cassan; hopefully.
Some miscellaneous shit:
There are a shitload of Deus Ex references in this game. If you read the names on e-mails you might recognize names like Nicolette DuClare, Morgan Everett, or Joseph Manderley.
The radio plays DX music.
Some guy in Detroit whistles the DX theme.
After the first mission, I explored Sarif HQ very thoroughly and when speaking to Pritchard, he mentioned that I should stay out of the ladies bathroom. In Deus Ex, you’re told to fuck off from the ladies room by Manderley if caught by the woman in it.
In the last level, there’s a hacking grid that resembles the DX logo.
When Jensen sets off the bomb at the dock, I believe the guy that runs on to the boat was Tracer Tong. The boat was also named “The Tracer”.
After the end credits, the developers present a tribute to Deus Ex by playing the theme song very fucking loudly.
