So, there's always that. That rumor actually did scare me a little.
I've never heard of that rumor, nor did I think that RAGE did poorly enough to put DOOM 4 into development hell. RAGE was praised for it's tight gameplay and gorgeous graphics. I figure the only reason the sales were on the low end was due to both people not knowing much about the game and thus passing it off as a Fallout/Borderlands knockoff and because that both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 were set to release not too long after Rage did.
I believe that Rage took quite a while to hit a million units sold. In the first week, it hit about half that, plus change likely. I'm not sure what numbers they were expecting or if they really did take a hit on it or not. But I didn't think it'd be enough to make them cancel the Doom 4 project either. I'm not sure if those shooters are to blame, either. Majority of sales for the game were actually on consoles. The same can be said for Battlefield 3. The xbox was actually the one that dominated BF3's unit sales. Though, I'm about to try to figure out MW3's. Fuck thaaat.
edit: Bluh. Got so caught up in that I forgot where I was going. But anyway. I only touched Rage briefly. But from what I got out of it, it had that real distinct id feel to it. It reminded me a lot of Doom 3, actually. I'd almost expect the new installment to play a lot like this. Rage is almost like a teaser.
Dead Space is really popular now. That one hit two million fast. I imagine it's made the kind of monster horror genre a bit more appealing to audiences. Not to mention the wonderful story to it. With all of the monstrosities in Doom, and this new storyline by this author who's an award winner in the genre, people are going to just gobble that shit up. And id knows it. Fuck, I could slam my face into the keyboard in excitement myself.
