I asked my friend if I could borrow his gameboy advance SP, I put this game in it and immediately had a blast of nostalgia, has anyone else played this game?
I've played this one a bit but I just don't enjoy it as much as the first DWM or even DQM: Caravan Heart but I have to agree that Dragon Warrior games never get old, especially Dragon Warrior 3 and DWM.
Actually DQM: Joker changes quite a bit, even if the overall concept is the same. You no longer lure monsters into your party with meat, you use the "Scout" command in battle to target the exact monster you want and a percentage gauge goes up depending on the attack power of your monsters. Despite my complaints about it when I first picked it up it was only because I prefer that certain parts of games not change. The scouting system not only makes it easier to get the specific monster you want out of any possible configuration of enemies as well as just flat out making it easier to get monsters since you no longer have to wait until they're dead to know whether or not you got them and if I remember correctly you can try again in the same battle to scout them again.
Another big change is that there are no random battles, monsters are visible in the field like in Earthbound, the Tales games and DQIX. Whether this is a good thing or not relies on your opinion. Personally I both like and dislike it because it's easier to avoid fights, but rare monsters tend to only spawn in one small area of any given zone.
The breeding system is different from the GBC DWM games in that instead of male and female monsters you have positively, negatively and neutrally charged monsters. Same basic system with a small bonus really, you have to fuse a positive with a negative or a neutral with either one, but you can't fuse two neutrals together. Because it's a "fusion" instead of two monsters breeding with each other there are no eggs, and no fortune teller that can change the "gender" of the monster inside, you immediately get your new monster after the fusion so if you need it to have a certain charge you have to rely on resetting the game until you get the result you want. I'm sure I'm forgetting things about the breeding system but it's been a while since I've played.
The leveling system has also changed some in that as your monsters level up they gain skill points that can be spent on different skill trees to gain spells and attribute bonuses. By breeding monsters you can add up to three different skills trees to a single monster, greatly increasing the potential number of spells you have access too over the older games.
It's a good game, though I haven't gotten very far into it as it's changed a little too much for my tastes. Oddly enough DQM: Caravan Heart is my second favorite of the series because it's nothing like the rest. Instead of being able to have a whole bunch of monsters in storage you only get a total of... eight I think. There's also no breeding, instead when you defeat your enemies they have a chance of leaving their heart behind which is used to change one of your monsters into a new one. Also instead of having just your monsters in battle each monster pulls a cart behind it filled with up to four adventurers with unique abilities depending on their class. Each turn in battle you can give orders to your monsters and then the people with you take turns taking actions. Each adventurer can do one thing in battle, warrior types hit, mages cast offensive magic, clerics heal and so on. Some adventurers have field abilities as well, though I can't think of any at the moment.
Again it's been about two years since I've played it so I'm forgetting a lot of things. If you're interested you're going to need to play it on an emulator if you want/need to play it in English as it was never released outside of Japan. Part of the reason I can enjoy it is I look at it as more of a spin off of the DQM series as opposed to a continuation of it. Yeah I know none of the games are related to each other story wise but it's just how I look at it so I can enjoy it lol. DQM Joker is too similar to the original games for me to be able to do the same though.
