i'll finish Fate/Extra once i have time . I just noticed that the background of my avatar and signature kinda match.
Ugh. I hear you. I'm 21, stuck in a crowded state with no prospects or jobs around and living with a pair of addicts, one of which is the only person capable of bringing in any money. If only the job market wasn't buttfucked so hard...
Hope you get a blessing and a half sometime soon, mate.
On topic: Saber Extra
would've been my favorite Saber (of the two I care about...until Fate/Apoccrpawhatever hopefully comes out), but then the writer kinda screwed up everything about her character in one go.
My explanation on this and what I think could've been better:
The scene after you use her FUCKING BADASS Noble Phantasm and she comes clean about who she is. You see, up until now she's been subtly remorseful about everything in her previous life as a ruler, to the point where, early on (if you choose the right option), she even alludes to the idea that she has no humanity and will never have one. Saber Nero is, in essence, a character that tries her best to act proud and righteous but is hounded by being one of the greatest monsters in human history, and she not only knows it, but condemns herself for it.
The big post-fight reveal she's on the verge of tears, screaming about how much she's come to love you through your earnest fight for what's right as well as trying to regain who you are, but what's making her cry isn't that she's finally getting her Dere out of her Tsun, but rather that she finds herself to be a monster and fully expects you to rightfully despise her. All the way up to here is fantastic.
_However, what the writer does then is suddenly take this down a traditional Japanese trend of "pride in one's life, no matter the life led". Problem is IT'S FUCKING NERO!! You can't do that! You can't have Nero say, "I know I was fucked up, but I accept the life I led and would not change."
_I don't think she actually says that, but it's pretty much in that vain. The conversation then turns to a narration about how the protagonist doesn't care that she's the Whore of Babylon and the one who SLAUGHTER COUNTRYMEN, INNOCENTS, AND CHRISTIANS EN MASSE!! It's all about her having pride and pride this and pride bullshit.
How it should've been handled:
Something to the effect of:
_Protagonist: "...I see."
_Silence ensues for a short time. Nero grows increasingly anxious towards the protagonist's stern gaze. The protagonist meanwhile thinks deeply on the true nature of the woman in front of him and the horrors she committed with such joy during her rule.
_Saber, her tension now at its peak, starts to open her mouth to shout at the silent protagonist. However, just as she was about to, the protagonist interrupts her with a question she wasn't expecting.
_Protagonist: "Do you regret any of it?"
_At first Saber is stunned confused, but the meaning of those words finally sink in and she suddenly lashes out at him. Her voice cracking from emotion, she yells, "Do I regret anything? How stupid! How ignorant! Idiot Praetor! I'm responsible for more deaths than you can imagine! The cries of my people resonate in my ears every time I recall my rule! The dark red blood on my hands prevent me from holding anything beautiful without having it slip from my grasp! The despair and agony and loathing I wrought stain me from head to toe!"
_Her anger melting into sorrow, she tells him, "...The worst part of it all is that, no matter how much I try to change, no matter how hard I try to become the honorable soul I should've been...I'll always be stricken with the terror that my alteration from demon to king has come too late..."
_Once more her anger rises at the pity in protagonist's face. With one last shaking yell, she bursts out at the top of her lungs, "So, Master, after asking such a barbed question, what do you think?!"
After which three replies can be given-
1. "I think there's no need for you to hurt anymore"
2. "I think you deserve this pain"
3. "I think the woman in front of me is the most beautiful woman in the world"
_The first leads to a furious Saber calming down under the soft understanding of the protagonist as he explains how people can't keep themselves nailed to their past, and that if they really want to change, then they've already split away from their shadow and deserve to be free from the pain of guilt.
_The second leads to an awkward silence where Saber, more hurt than angry, accepts the protagonist's despise and keeps to her promise of staying at his side, even if he never looks at her the same way again.
_The third leads to a more romantic version of the first's consequences, wherein Saber is stunned and blushes furiously as the protagonist explains that she's transformed from that beast of Rome into a beautiful woman and a ruler worthy of adoration. She no longer needs to hide herself, because what she truly is now is not a monster, but a proud and honorable warrior, and a woman the protagonist truly admires.
Now, a lot of people can say, "What balls you have, Mr. MegaTenLove, to say that it should've been done your way." Well, it's not a matter of having the writer copy-paste my interpretation of what should've happened, but of the general theme of the character reaching a logical climax.
_With all the remorse and guilt in Saber's words, where does "pride" fit in? It doesn't, and the idea that the protagonist thinks her past doesn't matter is childish. Literally. That's what a child's mind would say when confronted with the fact that their friend was once one of the cruelest despots in human history. Besides, it certainly mattered to Saber. Otherwise, why all the drama about her past?
I would've loved for it to have gone my way exactly, sure, but what should've happened was something to that effect. There's no way you can like a character who accepts the life they lived with pride when that life involved the castration of innocents, mass murder, and genocide. If you think it's too much then just switch out Nero with Hitler (Saber Hitler) and see if you can still say "It doesn't matter" or "It's good she's proud she lived the way she wanted to".
Still, with the fanciful ability to omit the (though glaring) singular flaw with Saber Extra thus far, I can say that, for me, she's on par with Saber Arturia. If things had gone the logical route then, well, sorry Arturia but that kind of character development would've been far too good. I would've had Saber Extra as my fave.
Also: It's amazing how going from Fate Extra into another game can just make every line of writing in that other game seem like utter tripe garbage. Not one recent release can match up to the character development, the plot, and the discussion of sociology/philosophy that's in Fate Extra.
With a story this rich, I'm almost scared to see how well written Fate Extra CCC is...
