I like Half-Life, but I've never understood why it has such universal acclaim. I think it is mostly because it hasn't aged well. Everyone and their mum has an equal or better physics engine now, the story is good, but not one of the best and silent protagonists are never anything to fawn over. I guess I'm just not the nostalgia type. It may have bee remarkable before, but now Half-Life is just average.
It revolutionized and brought a needed innovation into the gaming industry. It was the De-facto standard into what games should be from then after. The story is epic if you've played EP 1&2,. A much better sci-fi story than most games these days anyways.
Without it video games wouldn't be what they are today. The Half life in-game physics engine was years above it's competitors. Most if not all games have based their in-game physics engine on the Valve engine.
