All SPARTAN IIIs are dead except for Tom and Lucy, and no SPARTAN III teams that were trained would be old enough to fill out a middle-aged frame anyway. I'm not saying that they should haven followed to novel to the letter, because SPARTAN surface action was brief, but at least make it interweave with the pre-established universe, especially when the book itself is canon.
The story matters for Halo because it has developed such a rich universe for itself that it should have an at least alright story. Just Cause is also a terrible parallel to this. A better one would be something like, ummm.
What if Modern Warfare 2 (which apparently passes as a "good story") suddenly said something like: "Zakarov was really Jamaican and the Russian ultra-nationalists are just angry potheads. Mexico was the center of the new world war and an Army General lost thirty-thousand Marines when a nuke blew up....that's MARINES dying under an ARMY general (last part actually true)
People would get angry (maybe) because it doesn't keep in line with what is known to be true.
I got a very very very good lol out of the MW2 part.
Anyways, I agree, if Bungie fucks up the story as simply as that, it wouldn't do any good respect to John 117 and/or the Halo universe. Why do I have a feeling that the person who's writing the story never was introduced to the Halo universe before hand.
