Im looking for opinions on what others feel are some of the most iconic weapons in gaming today.
Personally for me its gotta be the Crowbar, as made famous by Gordon Freeman everyones favorite mute scientist.
I also asked a friend of mine and he replied with either the Redeemer from Unreal Tournament or the Lancer (AKA the chainsaw/machine gun) from Gears of War.
The Hammer Bros. Hammer and Koopa Shell from Mario and the Master Sword from Zelda are probably the most iconic weapons in gaming. Been around forever and appear in pretty much every installment of their respective games.
Assualt rifle from Halo Series or Cloud's Buster Sword or the traditional "Thrown Controller" weapon of angry gamers. The thrown controller one is probably most iconic.
I'd say for FPS, the BFG is the iconic weapon. A generic weapon like a shotgun or rocket launcher can't really be considered iconic, in my opinion. The Master Sword of Zelda is also a famous weapon amongst gamers. I'd say, though, that the one weapon that is iconic to most people, not just gamers, has to be the red or green shell from Mario/Mario Kart.
A weapon that isn't really iconic to western gamers but is, I think, instantly recognisable to Japanese gamers is Loto's Sword (aka Erdrick's Sword) from the Dragon Quest series. It's also the ultimate sword you can get in Final Fantasy XII (also being Gilgamesh's ultimate weapon) and it also makes an appearance as the unique weapon you can get from the Void Quest dungeon in Persona 4; the whole dungeon is a tribute to Dragon Quest, even the unique menu that the dungeon boss uses.
I don't think the average person would have heard of most of these weapons. All of these weapons are indeed awesome and legendary amongst gamers but hardly any of them are known to non-geeks. I can say, hand on heart, that only about 3 people I know would have heard of the gunblade, despite how great a weapon it is. No one else I know has even had a console since they were kids, if at all.
As a test, I told my brother about this thread. He had a PS1 when he was a kid and that was the only console he ever had. He owned only about 4 games in total. Anyway, I asked him "What do you think it the most iconic, most famous weapon of gaming? One that "everyone" would recognise?" and I was more than a little bit amazed to hear him say "The green or red shell from Mario". That's what my choice was in this thread, based not on what I think is a great or cool weapon but on what the average guy would have heard of and would find iconic of gaming. A guy that doesn't hang out on forums discussing games, doesn't check out gaming sites, doesn't buy gaming mags, etc.
That said, I'm more than happy to continue talking about epic gaming weapons, even if the average person doesn't know their Gravity Gun from their Hookshot.
