I've reciently been doing a series on youtube and blipTV called the animereviewguy where ive been looking at all the Japanese Anime games that were never released overseas to see if any are playable/enjoyable to an english speaking audience. So far ive done I"s, Code Geass and Chobits all on the PS2, and ive got DNAngel and the final mix's of Kingdom Hearts to go until the end of the first season.
I've ordered 7 more games for the next season with 3 being listed above and the other 4 being secret at the moment, and so I have a question for you guys!
Does anyone have any experience with Japanese only games? Have you ever played one and if so, what did you think? Most of the ones ive played so far are all text based, but I can still follow them along well enough without understanding most of it text-wise. Ive seen some 3D ones but not many really.
Vote what you would like to see first above to help me out too :D
Here is what ive done so far:
Review 1: I'S on Playstation 2
Review 2: Code Geass, Lost Colors on Playstation 2
I played quite a lot of Japanese only console games.
Like for example
-Mahou Sensei NEgima Jikanme 1 & 2 (there's actually 5)
It's a nice combination of "teaching", Dating sim, and "action game"
-Sakura taisen 1 to 5
Basically one of the best games SEGA has ever made, it's underrated it's dating sim, despite it has good story/drama, and good Strtegy game.
Its been a while since ive updated this thread, but here are the two other reviews ive done since then. Ive started to go about adding subtitles too since my attrocious Aussie accent stumps people sometimes :P
hmmm the code geass one looks good I want to try it but damm TT_TT
lol I know, it was quite challenging once I tried to get all the images, but for the most part it was just a button masher through text experience. I've decided ill do the Shana one next, although, I do have Lucky Star now....
LOL, Lucky Star. I got stuck in the third Star story, when they went into the PC online game. can't seem to get the ending.
So far first play through, while reading all text and listening to all dialogue took about 2 hours.
Second play through using all skip button took 11 minutes...
Im in the same place your talking about with the maze. Its pretty poorly layed out and im not sure if ill ever get out of it, but one day I will!! when I do ill upload the video how too :P

LOL, intentional bad maze is intentional.
I actually MADE MY OWN FUCKING MAP for that. I foudn out that in one of the corners there'sa spot where they sell images for the gallery.
Oh yeah! I remember finding that place as was like "...you have any yugioh cards?" but I too have thought of making my own map, and I found a door but I couldnt go through it. Ive kind of given up since then and just need a surge of pure dedication to go back and try again. Just seemed easier to move on to another game for the time being.
I've got a good handful of Japanese games with anime themes. Been actively playing real console imports since the late 90's and games have come and gone. Mainly they're console visual novels that got ported from the PC to consoles, but I also enjoy fighting and driving games with anime themes.
The last anime themed Japanese import I picked up was Negima Jinkame 1 on the PS2 and have been playing it on and off. I grabbed it pretty cheap brand new off eBay.
It's a 3D visual novel where you play as Negi and interact with the girls from the series. The game play is 3D, but the visual novel portion is typical sprite-based interaction. I have a VERY horrendous video of me playing the game on an older TV (I'm a loser and haven't set up any of my TVs to digitally record anything...). There's probably better video out there of the gameplay, as my clip is rather short.
I've got some other anime-themed game uploads there too, but they're all equally terrible in quality...

Seem fine if you just showing a quick clip and not reviewing them or anythying, Ive just got a cruddy external capture card which I bought for $15 on ebay, does an OK enough job.
Anyway that game looks interesting, its just fun to go through all these games and find those diamonds in teh rough that are actually very fun to play. Generally speaking since I saw the original series I know whats going on so my lack of Japanese understanding doesnt hinder me much (even though im in the efforts of learning Japanese). I like Negima too so maybe ill look into that one, although those series that have multiple games out make me wonder if I accidently buy the non-fun ones :P

I'm from Arkansas, so I'll refrain from speaking in those videos so one doesn't hear my deep southern hickish accent. :-D
The Negima game isn't bad, but not super amazing neither. It's got a lot of ecchi moments in it as you progress along. I was just goofing off at the beginning. Later you learn spells, like ones where the girls clothing gets blown upwards or to remove their clothes completely (like what frequently occurs with Negi in the manga & anime series). There's some battling too, but nothing Earth shatteringly amazing. There's I think four more or so other Negima games on the PS2, but I'm not going to buy them.
The reason I like to play these classic anime themed games that are from Japan is it really shows what America and other nation gamers were missing during the time period they were released. The visual novel genre in particular is rather interesting and it still hasn't caught on mainstream in the U.S. (notice it takes games like the PS2 Persona games where the dating sim element is woven into the gameplay itself to make a dating sim work).

HARRY POTTER AINT GOT SHIT ON THESE SPELLS!
regardless I see what you mean with the mixing of dating sim mechanics of the Persona series and how that works with an american audience. Im actually unsure as to wiether most of the games ive been playing can be classified as dating sims since I havnt really been dating in them, just kind of studying, walking around etc. Visual novels are a fair assesment as you have said, but I want to find something in these games I can enjoy outside of just reading the whole game, and the only game ive found that is purely a visual novel so far is the I's Pure game, the rest have at least something in them that requires some skill.
I have started playing Shana now, and it is quite...well...fun lol
