Next Gen System Coming Soon?

Nah the current economy and sells of current gen 360/PS3 more people finally taking the leap and buying them
There is no market at this point that would merit a next gen system
Right now we are pushing the limit of what can be done with video games
There is just no tech to push games any further at this point hence no new system for a long time
The only issue right now is memory capacity something PS3 does not suffer from i.e. Blu-ray
But 360 does the reason why some studios are not happy
Microsoft could of release a new version of 360 with Blu-ray but they did not instead they just release a slim down cheaper version to mass produce
Which a lot of people are pissed about
Long story short no one going to buy a whole new system $400-600 again giving the solid titles out there and coming from studios that are now invested in projects built on current gen platforms
Also to add the recent push of PS3 Move and soon to be 360 Natal/Kinect

I agree, the companies are going to hold down this bad economy and just release add ons, hardware (move/kinect), updates, more user content and the like, no one can afford $300~$400 of a new console, but they will however, shell out $.99~$14.99+ at a time.

What is next gen? 3D? Better graphics? We're already at the pinnacle of the latter and the addition of the former.
The 3DS might be considered a next gen console because it is truly innovating in the handheld market and building new hardware rather than modifying the proprietary, but I honestly can't see a new home console beyond building in the add-ons for many years to come.
I think the next step is probably Beyond HD, but that's many years from reaching anything like an economically viable minority of homes.

None of the current companies making console systems are considering releasing new "next gen consoles" but that doesn't mean they aren't being developed. You wont see them being discussed for another 2-3 years at least.

I hope they are going to release new consoles soon.
Consoles are really holding back PC because a lot of the games are multiplatform these days and they have to be built around the lowest common denominator which is consoles.
Current gaming computers are more than 12 times the power of consoles.
Heck my budget computer build from 2007 is easily more than 3-4 times the power of a console.
Consoles deal with low resolution, low texture res, bad LOD, short draw distance, low AA an AF, low shadows res, prebaked shadows textures and lighting and much much more.
The only reason I am upgrading my computer in early 2011 is for games like The Witcher 2 and Crysis 2.
We are so far away from hitting the limit graphically, especially consoles which are far behind computers now.

Thats not entirely true. The main factor holding back computer graphics are simply other computer users. Game developers have keep in mind low end users too. If nobody even owned a console tomorrow, it wouldn't change the graphics of PC games because there are still going to be many people who won't upgrade their computers or simply cannot (i.e. Laptops users).

The Blu-Ray Disco Association does, which Sony is a part of. Microsoft would have to first become a member of the Blu-Ray association, but they would not have to pay royalties to Sony.

Not really the reality of it is
that it would be to much time & money for the PC developers to create a high end graphical game pushing the limit of what can be done with current hardware
There is not a large enough consumer based to recover the cost of such a super game
not many people would be able to run it or play it much less
What we see now graphic wise is the limit actually PC & Consoles
the only restraint right now is memory capacity and bandwidth limit for online gaming

It is a mess in the industry right now, there is still some ripple effects from the last console war (PS2, XBOX, GC) and right now they been hitting walls by how this generation has been (DLC, direct dowload, large game library, etc.)
The most likely step would be to go into the clouds (cloud computing) potentionally knocking the used game sale in Gamestop (companies are trying to slow down the used game sale as they earn no profit from them). Now the one thing that may be keeping the release of a new console would be library of games (who shall desing for them); just look alone at the PSP, a system that doesn't have many interesting games for the public (sorry if I offended anyone, but that is how it is looking currently). Eventually graphics need to improve (as always) but isn't it advancing too fast as our eyes can catch only so much.
I do have to beg the question on why Nintendo haven't updated their Wii system (in graphic, memory expansion, and overall) if not to 1080 but to at least 720, and have better saving options; in addition to gaming transfer (and accounts)

Nintendo wouldn't benefit from an updated system (right now at least) because they know it would not be taken seriously or reach any demographics that they have not reached yet. Anyone who is a graphic junkie either already an Xbox or a Playstation, and possibly both.
Its the reason they made motion control in the first place, their philosophy is to not compete in the hardware department because they do not want to get into an arms race.
Also, accounts any more complicated than the miis are against their approach as well. Remember, they want the Wii to be more akin to a Dvd player than a computer. Simplicity is their strength.

True in all, it shall be interesting seeing what they are cooking up after the 3DS.
