My current party on Emerald is as follows:
Blaziken,
Shack; a reference to the
Shamo chi
cken which it's apparently based on.
Shiny Loudred/Exploud,
Whisper; because delicious irony.
Gardevoir,
Angela; since this particular one is female and Gardevoir's based on a Guardian Angel (among other things), I thought it was fitting.
Lairon,
Hevee'metul; because it's a rhino made of metal.
Vibrava,
Dragonfly; pretty obvious one this one.
Lombre,
Lilly; it's female and it has a lilly pad on its head.
Generally my nicknames will be a reference to what they're based on or other external references. For example:
- Pidgeys I will always nickname Strawberry, because of that one NPC in Violet City in Pokemon GSC who owns a Pidgey with the same nickname. Plus I like strawberries.
- Xatu I name Totem, because it's based on a totem pole
- Pichu/Pikachu/Raichu will always be named Sparky
- Groudon is named Rog; before Ruby and Sapphire was released, I saw prerelease gameplay images R/S, and one of them was Groudon in battle with the same nickname. To keep up the theme, I also nickname Kyogre Reg and Rayquaza Ray.
- Geodude/Graveler/Golem, Derek. A G/S/C Pokemon Handbook I used to own had screenies of someone who used a Geodude/Graveler with that nickname.
- Tentacool/Tentacruel, Testacruel
. Self explanatory.
- Raikou is always named Raiju, Entei named Vincent and Suicune Aurora, its pokedex species.
Sometimes I might even get lazy and just use a piece of their names;
- Eeveelutions: Flareon Flare, Jolteon Jolt, Vaporeon Vapour, Umbreon Umbra, Espeon Esper and Eevee EV. The same would also apply to the newer ones if I'd bothered to get them on the newer games; Leafeon Leaf, Glaceon Glacius and Sylveon Sylph
- Legendary Birds: Articuno Uno, Zapdos Dos and Moltres Tres
- Hitmons: Hitmonchan Chan, Hitmonlee Lee, Hitmontop Top
I could go on but I think you get the idea.
