I'm just getting into the world of visual novels, I've played 4 so far (katawa shoujo, Fate/stay night, ever17, and G-senjou no maou). I'm trying to decide whether I should play all the routes before I move on to the next VN, or just play one route, play a different game, then come back to it to finish the other routes.
In your experience, what's the best way to make the most out of a VN? play all the routes consecutively, or just play one route at a time, coming back later to finish the other routes
Well, it depends on your own playstyle and "attention span" lol.
If you can jump around vns without losing the "feel" then you're free to try "my playstyle".
but if you can't, then just stick to one at a time.
It depends on your memory. If you can write a paragraph or so of what previously happened the last time you played it regardless of how long ago it was, then you can hop from game to game without having to worry. If you can't do so within a month's timeframe, then I'd recommend just sticking to one.
There's also the possibility of you getting bored of one after playing another, and ultimately deciding not to go back to it, which would be a shame when one considers your choices of Visual Novels.
I'm also pretty new to VNs, but I definitely prefer to just play one or two games at a time, three at max. I could play a lot more, I used to read about 6 books at a time, but then I feel like my play time is too thinly spread and none of them will ever get finished.
My playstyle is to try to finish'em all, one after the other. Unless it's a very heavy story or it changes dramatically from one to another.
Then I am able to play another one at the same time.
But, as said, it all depends on how much of the story you're able to remember easily. Sometimes the story isn't so forgiving and you'll have to remember some parts from the other route.
[color=#2e1a6b]Just to clarify, I'm not talking about switching Visual novels in the middle of a route. I'm asking about what you do after you complete a route: do you play a different route, or switch games?
I mostly don't switch games because after I finish a character route, usually it's a breeze to finish all the others.
(Unless I really don't like a certain character, I leave her route undone and switch to an another game.)
[color=red]Well I usually change the game after finished 1 route. Because after I finished 1 route, I feel bored to enter another route.
Like when I played Lovely x Cation - G-Senjou - Kira*Kira, I waited till my excitement (the feeling after finished 1 route) died, and played another route.
This is kind relative. Like Kaimax said, it depends on your playstyle and if you can get the "feel" you had when playing it if you ever get back on it. You don't want to load a save to play another route and don't remember anything from the story / common route. That just breaks immersion and full enjoyment.
However, note that there are some Visual Novels where it's not recommended to do that. Take Ever17 for example. If you just played one route and dropped the game you wouldn't even begin to understand why the game is so highly rated.
Basically, this issue is directly related to the type of Visual Novel that you're reading.

[color=#2e1a6b]I don't know if the inverse of your statement is true, but you're exactly right
When I played Ever17, I was bored the entire time. I hated the guys you play as, I hated all the girls except for You, and I got this ending
I was so bored of this game that I just switched visual novels. I'm not sure if I'll go back to finish the other routes
I jump towards visual novels with a completionist attitude, partially because I want to savor the feeling of immersion that overtakes you as you get drawn in to an amazing story, but mostly because I know my attention span and if I stray from one game, I'm not likely to come back to it for a very long time.
