For fucks sake, Ubisoft. You went and got your Japan in my Persia.
I have so many complaints about this new turn, just from watching the gameplay trailer and listening to the commentary.
First off, where the fuck is my time manipulation ability? That added a much needed degree of "Hold a tic, let me catch my breath" to the frantic combat 2 and 3 had. 1, not so much. But in 1, you needed all your sand for their insane platforming anyway.
Second, this is a bit of a nitpick, but the sword. That thing is just asking for a penis joke.
Third, the new ally. "Follows you around"? "Makes you look cooler"? "Tells you where to go so you don't get lost"? "Saves you when you die"? What is this, "Prince of Persia 4: Look, mommy! I can play games too!" edition?
The whole POINT of the last 3 PoP games was that you had to be responsible for your leaps and fights. You had to conserve sand during fights for if you took too many hits, or for when you missed a platform jump. And now, we have the glowing girl swoop down and save you if you miss a jump, or if you take a sword to the head?
Next, the combat: I'm torn on the new combat. It seems a little DMC/Ninja Gaiden'y for prince of persia. Pop up attacks? Juggles? I don't see the point.
And, the commentary wasn't too clear on a certain point. They say that the feel of the combat is supposed to be that of a duel, you and glowy vs the bad guys. However, the guy makes it sound like each enemy encounter will be a miniboss fight. What happened to the good old 1 on many fights from sands of time?
Those were fun.
The free roaming, I like. I was always, always trying to beat the puzzle at it's own game in SoT, and the only things that stopped me were usually invisible walls. Taking away those walls, I like.
The new VA, though, is good. The banter didn't sound too bad, and the actors themselves were actually trying to sound good. I guess that's something I should forgive glowy: You can't banter with yourself.
:!:
Yeah, I agree with you on the fact that they seem to be taking the challenge away with Elika saving your ass every time or with the claw you can stay up longer and the fact that they took the time manipulation away is a bummer.
I didn't really think the fights in the first 3 were that much of a challenge, but when you died you can bring yourself back, but there is a limit to how many times you can be saved (since I always tried to out do myself and rush through the course). As for the fights being cool because the time manipulation is corrected by the combos you do with Elika. I also don't like the fact that they took away 1 vs many, and with the stealth/speed kills being introduced in the 3rd one I was hoping if they ever made another PoP they would implament it further.
But this game does have its good side. The engine makes the actions a lot smoother, the environment looks good (though I can't say the same for the cell shaded characters...) and the combos you do with Elika are pretty cool looking.
