Terranigma for the SNES, the third part of a very loosely connected "trilogy" of games (Soul Blazer being the first and Illusion of Gaia the second). The gameplay is similar to... a more action oriented Zelda? Not the most apt comparison but it's all I can think of right now. Unlike most Action RPG games the hero uses a spear instead of a sword and has access to various attacks that kind of work like a rock/scissors/paper style of combat. Aerial enemies take more damage from one attack, "hard" enemies from another, and small enemies from yet another. You can block most projectile attacks, and can use different healing items in real time to cure poison or restore HP.
In order to change equipment you enter Pandora's Box and guide the demon(?), Yomi, around to act like a cursor. You can also check on what attacks work against what types of enemies, how much XP you need to level up and so on here.
The story is pretty interesting and well done compared to most of what I've seen, and while the controls can take a little getting used to they flow pretty well and make the game a really enjoyable experience overall. The art style can be compared to Chrono Trigger though it's not as cleanly done it holds up well and the bosses especially have a more unique look than some SNES era games. The sound track is actually one of my favorite parts of the game, especially the song The Departure which plays the "over world."
THIS MAN! Listen to him cuz his words are good and true. Seriously, soul blazer trilogy is made of pure win, and terranigma is certainly no exception!!! Its been a while i finished any of those games, maybe i ought to do a little marathon...
But my most recent gem is definitly Nier gesthalt. The animation and graphics in this game are really not that good, but the beauty in the game is everywhere else. The storyline is just off the hook, theres a lot of narration, it fits, its juicy, it has meaning, and the english is dub is actually very good, so its not a pain to listen to the story.
Another selling point would be the ost. The game didnt sell that much, and yet, this games soundtrack is #1 on the "ost on demand" list on playasia (or at least it was 3 days ago). I didnt think Id like the game at first and after i finished it (4 times), it became my game of the year. Its hard to explain why though, its really quite the experience :)
