Oh god... Why do the developers have to change game content based on the region? Most games made by Japanese developers are cut down because some content is "region-exclusive". Why? Not only Japanese developers, but many others.
For example, take these two songs, both from the same game, same stage, but for some reason SEGA thought they should change the music:
USA Version:
JAP/EU Version:
Also, take the Rockman (Megaman) games series. Rockman.exe, Ryuusei no Rockman, and others, all have Japanese-only content.
Some differences are alright, due to racial reasons, like in the fallout series, Bethesda changed the name of a weapon; "The Fat Man" which launches nuclear bombs, was changed to "The Nuka-Launcher" in the Japanese version, as "Fat Man" is the nickname of the bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945.
But it doesn't just stop at differences, some developers won't even release games out of their region! For instance the Korean rhythm game "Jubeat" wasn't released anywhere out of Asia.
Well that has always happen with many game if u want to know.
If u noticed, u will also see how Suikoden cover of the games differs so much with the exact presentation in the game only because most of Japanese developer believe that most people on the West love realistic picture more than anime style.
While for music....... i can say that the Jap think that people on the West don't really like some kind of J-pop which is why they would love to change the music for the other region. Well the other reason i believe would easily be....."money" as some of the song is sing by a famous singer in Japan which make the company need to give a hefty amount of money for the singer only to publish some song which is still not guaranteed 100% success.
Well this is only my opinion from how i see the case don't know how others see this.
I don't care if the whole world is against me on this, the silly tongue-in-cheek humor changes, Mark suddenly being a stereotypical, token, black kid, horrible translation mistakes and typos... it's glorious! I find the faults of the localization to be so endearing and hilarious in their idiocy that the game instantly is much more enjoyable than its Japanese counterpart.
Then there is the whole, Americans suck at JRPGs argument, because they toned down random Demon encounters and increased the amount of experience in the localization, but honestly. Anyone who says that Revelations: Persona isn't a challenging JRPG is a horrible liar. The game isn't any easier just because you might level up a little faster. It still takes DAYS of level grinding to be able to use Lucifer, so I don't want to hear it.
as long as they dont change the core game it doesnt really bother me all that much, hell if it wasnt for the internet we probably would never even know the difference.
You forget the whole thing about Poison in Final Fight because of the Feminists in America at that time, or something like that. That's the biggest one. She will always be a woman to me.
I've always believed that the regional differences were mainly due to marketing reasons. Ever see the difference between Star Ocean:TLH International vs. the US version?
I'm really irritated because, here, in Australia we get the LEAST extra content. Content removal goes: Japan > US/EU > Eveywhere else (including Aussie)
