Black Ops. Play S.O.G. on Veteran and tell me after your 1000th time trying to run down the hill that the person who made that level isn't the devil himself!!! I dare you!
When you hear this relaxing tune, you know you're fucked. And the sounds of scissors clanging behind you.... just add to it. And you start to wonder, which *Bad* ending will you get this time, since there are like >9000 of them. And while it may not look so scary now in 2011, it gave me nightmares back in 99 considering that i was playing it with 6 more friends in the middle of the day.
Possibly Silent Hill 3, or maybe Resident Evil 1 way back in the day.
They were pretty cool but zombie games never worked for me. The first one I played got me scared a little but after that they all seemed the same to me, that is just shooting the shit out of zombies.
Back when RE first came out in 1996 it was groundbreaking, it was the first survival horror game (not counting Alone in the Dark) and it was scarier than anything out yet at that time.

Oh the memories~
Spoiler:
That game hooked me on zombies. The zombie movies before that never really thrilled me. The outside perspective versus being put right in the middle of the infestation.

At last somebody who understand how scary is clock tower. Till now i still believe that clock tower is much scarier compare to other game especially the BGM and have u tried the SNES one? The atmosphere is much darker i think compare to PS1's.
The one who have this kind of aura is probably Haunting Ground which is probably not so scary as we can kinda fight for our own life.
Yep, Fatal Frame series did it for me. Absolutely hated the monk ghost in the first one, he'd just brush up against you in a tight corridor and 70% of your HP is gone. Bastard.
Dead Space. I could only play it in 1 hour spans, after that I pretty much just lock up and can't play, just go though audio logs and stuff until I realize I can't do it anymore.
Amnesia. It was really a well done horror game that'd scare the shit outta ya. Loved every second, considering that it's one of the first games of its genre to scare me.

I actually started playing the SNES one as soon as i wrote that post, already completed it. It's ok but,it's just so easy to get the desired ending which is kinda letdown.
F.E.A.R 1 creeped me out. but for scared maybe dead space, got it and played it on a hudge TV with surround sound on halloween night just after a horror movie fest with 2 friends.
Silent hill 3 overall was the scariest game for me.
-Fatal frame? Didn't do much for me. Ghosts aren't scary to me + I fucking hated the camera system. 2 was the best. 1 had too many of the same enemy's. 3 had a horrible level design.
-Haunting ground? Had it's moments. Pretty good game.
-Siren? Probably the 2nd scariest game I've ever played.
Spoiler:
I remember 2 of the characters were a teacher and a very young girl, probably 8~ish. For a few levels, you were the teacher and had to guide her to safety with you. Then on one level, the kid was waiting for the teacher to come back, and when she did, she was "infected" just like the other villagers. What was scary about it is how pale she was, and her eyes were bleeding red with blood... just trying to imagine the one person you depend on protecting you, only to see them become the enemy as well, was fucking creepy
-Eternal darkness? Fucking awesome and innovative. It really didn't deserve enough praise when it came out. :(
