Kagami Renka and his stepdad move to a rural town called Hisamimura where Renka had been growing up when his mother was still alive. Stepdad got relocated back there because of his job. He offered his son the option of staying behind to finish high school, but Renka was curious about his mother’s past. The city boy finds new friends quite fast.
Basically, Hisamimura was built with permission from a local deity. In return for its generosity, the deity demanded that they welcome any foreigners who wish to settle on their land with open arms as it did when they first arrived. One day, a beautiful woman came from the sea and wanted to enter, but the villagers denied her request because they were convinced that she was a monster. Calamity strikes, water rises, the village gets almost completely wiped out. Villagers then begged the deity for mercy, so they built a shrine on the beach where they found a doll visually similar to the woman whom they denied entry.
Present day, Renka gets lost in the village at night and wanders off to the beach where he curiously enters the shrine where the doll is being kept. He panics upon discovering the doll, but shits his pants when a mysterious girl with long hair asks him who he is.
