Valkyrie Fight Tag is the underrated sequel to the original two-dimensional fighting game, Valkyrie Fight. Valkyrie Fight Tag, like its predecessor, is based on the Valkyrie Profile, a series of games for the PSX and PS2 game ports. They are both independently done, however, and VFT was released at the turn of the century for Windows. AmaginZ is the developer.
Valkyrie Fight Tag is largely inspired by classical Norse mythology, and many of the playable characters the user had to choose from are ancient Norse gods. The characters are anime, but feature excellent detail, especially for a fan-made fighting game. They are each varied and individual in appearance, and in fighting style. A single person can face a battle, or two people can play cooperatively in the “Team Attack” mode. There is also a very challenging head-to-head “Versus” mode. All of the characters available in each style of play are ported right from the original Valkyrie Profile.
The concept of “tag” is also well implemented. The user does not play as a single character, but instead chooses two from the list of available players. Play begins with one player, and at any time during a fight, the user can change the original combatant out with one waiting in the wings…similar to “tagging out” in a partner wrestling match. There are two results during a tag. Either the first character jumps off the screen and a second leaps in to take his place OR the user can perform a super swap where the second character performs one of his super moves immediately upon entering the screen. This deals copious amounts of damage and can serve as an excellent strategy when fighting large monster.
Each character has his own super moves, and there are three levels for each move: light, medium and fierce. Of course, the light attacks deal little damage, but they are fast and do not require much power. The fierce attacks require a lot of energy to execute and will drain the power meter very quickly, but they will do much more damage. The ability to perform different attacks leads to great combos.
In short, Valkyrie Fight Tag is a great colourful game featuring smooth animation and game play, and a lot of action packed fun for one or two people. Its combinations and varied fighting techniques give it a good replayability factor and additions, such as the great music and sound, give it more depth and flavour than the average fighting game.
Personal Take:
The fast paced fighting style that allows you to skillfully chain combos or get out of trouble makes this a very fun game game when played against another skilled opponent.
Most characters have moves that are triggered by quartercircle forward/backward, and then an attack or defensive button. If you use a quartercircle but then execute it with the character switch button, your partner will enter the fray by executing a move of their own (depending on if you used quartercircle forward of backward, and if they have the required energy). This makes the game interesting because when you manage your energy correctly, you can create some very effective offensive or defensive combos.
When your character is fully charged, you can execute their final/special moves from the game by using halfcircle forward->heavy attack, and if you have both characters fully charged, you can execute BOTH finishing moves at once by using halfcircle forward->partner switch.
Forgive me if any of the combat related info is invalid, I haven't played the game in a little while.
