What language do you play on a visual novel?

While I prefer English, I have played Japanese VNs on occasion. I have taken 5 semesters of Japanese, so I can somewhat defend myself when reading through some VNs. If there is something beyond my scope of understanding I have dictionaries on hand or look it up online.

English and I would learn japanese but theres no schools or classes in my area that teach

Both. I recently started playing Japanese VNs using a dictionary/translator. Of cause, I still prefer English most of the time.

English, if there's a patch out there.
Japanese, if there's no patch or I'm too lazy to get it.

Since most of VNs I owned don't have english patch, so, mostly japanese.

If I knew more Japanese, I would not even bother finding patches and read/play them the way they were meant to.

But, unfortunately, that's not the case and I have to wait for a patch for Rewrite....

I speak English, so I play in English.
Why do people play these kinds of games (VNs/dating sims) in Japanese when they don't speak it*? It's so counterproductive. You downloaded 4+ gigs to enjoy a story, right?*[size=10]c)[/h] Then why play in a language you don't understand, and miss out on the whole point of the game? Idk. I'm mostly talking about the weaboos on /b/ I've seen lately.

I don't mean to annoy anybody. When I'm tired I tend to piss people off lmao.

a) They cannot read Japanese writing [[aside from, maybe, a few characters/sentences]] & are not playing the game in Japanese to learn Japanese
b) There is a translation available for their language that they can readily download & have no trouble doing so
c) They aren't just playing for the hentai and/or CGs[/h]

In my case it was very productive.
I eventually learned to "read" Japanese after 3 years of forcing myself to understand it.

In my "time" the only translated VNs was mostly just sex oriented VNs. Horny Bunnies, Nurse, Gibo, Brave Soul.

Since I was craving for my "story oriented" VNs like Tsukihime, I forced myself to play VNs with AGTH and ATLAS. Started out by playing Slice of Life VNs, since they have more common Kanji. At that time it was Shuffle, Tick Tack and Really Really.

and without realizing, I can now play/read most VNs without translations.
