I personally really enjoyed the Growlanser series of games that were brought over during the life of the PS2. They're a good break away from normal RPGs and play a lot like Final Fantasy tactics. They involve you having sets of characters that you build up, and then the "fights" you get into often have specific mission objectives you have to meet, like protecting a convoy or killing a particular enemy within a certain period of time.
I also enjoy the series because the character designer is Satoshi Urushihara - the famed hentai artist.
Working Designs released Growlanser 2 and 3 as a set, "Growlanser Generations";
And then Atlus themselves released Growlanser 5, "Growlanser - Heritage of War";
You would probably have some serious difficulty locating Growlanser Generations. Customary to standard Working Designs protocol, they released two versions of the game to drain gamer's money. The first was a "standard edition" which was just the two games. And the second was the "deluxe edition," which included many extras. The deluxe edition demands a higher price among collectors.
You do have to put up with rather lack-luster graphics - even by PS2 standards. These are games that could have been on the PS1. Growlanser 2 is much easier than Growlanser 3, and most critics agree that the later is the better of the two. I personally like Growlanser 2 because of all the ridiculous possible endings you can get, including a few were you're the enemy.
Growlanser Heritage of War only saw one release by Atlus and it was a collector's edition. It wasn't printed for a very long time and garnered some average to bad critique. It's a lot better graphically-wise than the prior Growlanser games in that the series went 3D. However, the battle mechanics can be a bit quirky. It in all honesty plays a REAL lot like FF7, except battles are real time. Also like it's predecessors, the battles are often objective-based.
If you want something seriously different, might be something to explore.
