What do you all consider a STRONG character? What kinds of characters do you appreciate in fiction, and why? In your opinion, can a character be unlikeable while still being "strong" in how they're written? In example, what characters do you like (and/or hate) most, and why?

I have a fondness for the "dark hero" characters, the ones who fight for the all the right reasons and use some of the worst methods to do so, the ones with the deep, dark issues and deeply seated hatred for another character or organization within the story.

For me, Its gotta be a "Human" character, as in... They are not invincible, they have bad moments, lack of judgement, But~ they can be just as promising in the end.
I also have a weak-spot for young / child-soldiers, BAD I KNOW.
But something about having them grow up into the role of an Assassin/Soldier/Person
always seems to get me .-.

I like characters who have been shit on by life or friends but continue on, though that often means getting revenge. Revenge is fine, as long as they aren't doing it because they are now horribly damaged. I can't respect that if they are too focused on revenge and can't see how they effect others around them. The character must want to even the score or find out why he was betrayed without being a destructive dick.
When I say this, I think of the book, Sandman Slim.

Someone that is not invincible. Definitely. I prefer the characters to be strong(no doubt 'bout that), or good at whatever they do. They might not be the one with the powerful fists but I want them to have a good head on their shoulders. I don't mind the badasses that can kick a real powerful antagonist in a fair fight(meaning he has a chance) and delivers a Crowning Moment of Awesome. Think Tohno Shiki from Tsukihime
I find myself despising the idiots in fiction that always try to reason their way with the villains. I prefer those anti-hero types that can say, "You gotta do it cause you just gotta" I guess. Think Archer from Fate Stay Night.

For my money, the single most important quality in a character is growth. I want a character to learn to see the world in a new way, to expand his thinking, to use experiences to reach a new level of understanding.
Such growth is not always so important in a short story. But it's the single most important thing in a novel, as far as I'm concerned.

Strength is the power to be confident. Do you want to rape little children? Show how confident you are. And then I'll show you how confident I am. There can only be one at the top of a mountain, and the competition of wills is the only path to that summit.
I appreciate characters who understand that they should never say anything they're not willing to die over, because saying meaningless things is just bothersome and a waste.
Characters can be strong and unlikeable. I hate characters that don't even bother trying to understand meaning.
