Now in Hyde Park, the two came. It was pleasant and quiet, with the cool breeze blowing, Laura simply took in the atmosphere and found herself relaxing already. The smoke that was carried in the air was fainter than usual, as the factories were not functioning so late at night.
“You know, we are breaking the law by coming here this late. The curfew is still in effect,” Laura said, “Not that I hate coming here.”
“As long as no one finds us, it’s okay. This is the perfect time to go to the park, it’s nice and calm.” Michael was sitting on the grass, his legs outstretched. “Today… today, I managed to get Iris in danger again. I’ve done nothing but to bring her to harm,” Michael said to Laura, his tone sounded like he was asking Laura for help.
“Then don’t involve her so much,” Laura said, as if it was the most obvious answer in the world, “If she is your sister, you should be keeping her away from danger, not dragging her right into it. I suppose you know that, but you make the same mistake anyway. That mission was yours; not her’s.”
“I don’t want to, but at the same time, I feel like she won’t listen to me if I told her to go away from me.” Michael laid down on the grass before he continued. “I suppose I was the reason she is in that form in the first place. Anyway, how are you?”
“Don’t change the topic now, how did you change her form to a spiritual apparition to begin with?” Laura enquired, not letting Michael switch the conversation to a different topic with a question. “It seems like her body is laid dormant somewhere, while her spirit channels mana to make herself take an ephemeral form in this realm.”
“Not sure how she did that spirit thing but; remember the first time Mister Stoker got away? She took the bullet meant to end him then.” Michael replied, “So to be completely honest with you, we aren’t really siblings.”
Laura finally sat down beside Michael on the green grass, and pondered over the words she had just heard.
“...So that’s the truth. I knew you were lying in some way about the siblingship – considering the differences in facial features – but I did not press further as that would be too personal.” Laura then looked up to the moon, and sighed. “I suppose you have to make it up to her for that bullet?”
“I’m not entirely sure. Partly that, I guess. I also want to know why. Why did she take that bullet? Why was she there in the first place.” Michael looked down on the ground taking a moment’s pause before continuing, “I suppose I lied about our relationship because I don’t want her to be branded as accomplice of sorts. I don’t think she would be a girl that would be involved in these affairs. No, I believe she is innocent.”
“She does seem to appear innocent, yet why would she subject herself to more danger, especially when it was you who shot her?”
Michael fell silent at Laura’s question. There have been plenty of times Michael could have asked this to Iris, but he chose not to. He felt confused, yet afraid of what the answer might be; so he chose not to ask. He closed his eyes and saw Iris in his head, how many times must she be hurt before he does something about their status quo?
“I suppose she did not tell you,” Laura said, concluding from the silence. “If you won’t do anything about it, don’t complain about it after it is too late to act.”
“I didn’t ask.” Michael replied as he sat back up. “But I think with the affair of the cloaked man done, she would also… she would go back home. I think it’s best like that. Executors work alone after all. I was serious when I asked, though. How are you? Did it completely heal?” He looked at Laura.
“Let us hope she goes back. On the subject of myself, though… I don’t know. It doesn’t feel like there is particularly anything wrong with me, but I do feel great shame at my failure that night, and I feel like a vile being just from being bitten that way… not that I wasn’t vile before with my ears, or anything.”
“I shouldn’t have gotten you involved. You and Iris both. I’m sorry.”
“Yes, you better be sorry,” Laura said, but she was smiling. “I don’t regret helping that night, though. Mary is indeed tangled in various situations, and we got to see some things that may one day help us figure out some mysteries. We also found a vampire, one of our biggest enemies, thanks to you, and taking out a heretic is our job.”
“He managed to get away, still. I promise you, the next time he shows up I’ll send him to where he belongs,” Michael said to Laura, finally smiling as he saw her smile. “Although, I suppose you’d prefer it if you finish him yourself?” he added.
“No, I am not one driven by vengeance or anger, simply my duty and nothing else. It does not matter which of us finishes him off, as long as we get the job done,” Laura answered. “However, I may not be able to fight him again.”
“Why do you say so?” Michael asked.
“I may have to quit the Church soon,” Laura finally said, after a moment of silence. “I hear that my mother had passed away recently, and I am rather… uncertain about what I want to do at the moment.” She looked up to the moon yet again, a look of melancholy floating up to her face. “It was only because I was exiled from the Realm of the faeries that I came down to this Realm, and took up new beliefs, different morals, and a new faith to follow, but now that my mother is dead, my relatives want me back there.”
“Eh?” Michael froze as he listened to what Laura was saying. He suddenly grabbed Laura shoulders and spoke, his voice was a mix of panic and distress. “Wha- don’t go! I- so suddenly?! I-I-”
“I don’t but… I really do love my mother, despite all that she did to me,” Laura uttered, her expression clearly saddened, she avoided looking into Michael’s face, but did not try to push him away.
“But… must you really go back there? I-” Michael stopped himself when he realised what position they were in. What was I trying to say? He let go of her shoulders and sat back, in front of her. “I’m sorry. I forgot myself.”
“Well, for now I am here,” Laura said, her heart was racing faster than ever as she looked down to the grass after Michael took his hands away. “Until the Queen’s Meeting, at least.”
“If you don’t mind me asking, what was the reason you left in the first place? And why the Church?” Michael asked desperately trying to take his mind off what he just did. His face felt hot and it was as if every beat of his heart were drums pounding in his chest. He dared not to look at Laura at the moment.
“...And why the Queen’s Meeting?”
“I… I killed my father,” Laura confessed, her voice low. She reminded herself of a sin she wanted to forget. “He wanted to… well…” she sighed, as if preparing herself mentally, “Molest me. After that, I was never the same, nor was my mother, and she’d never listen to what I had to say, and dismissed the truth in the very instant I told her. I was forced out of the Realm after that, and wandered across the human society for years. Since I had nowhere to go, I’d often take shelter in churches, that’s where I came to learn about a faith I hadn’t heard of before; Christianity. Eventually, I decided to atone for my sin by becoming a Christian and serving the Church… now this happened. I am one of the representatives sent for the Queen’s Meeting, so I am considering to resign after my responsibility is fulfilled there.”
Michael was speechless after listening to Laura’s story; he felt selfish after asking her to stay, only caring for what he was feeling. “I see. If that is what you think you should do. But-” He gazed at her eyes, as he filled himself with resolve. “But at least let me accompany you to the Queen’s Meeting. You’re… a treasured friend. I promise you it would not interfere with the mission given to me.”
“Well, I haven’t made a decision but…” Laura said, her voice trailing away, “In exchange… you’d have a price to pay for a bit.”
“Well, you guys still haven’t raised my salary…” Michael joked, smiling at Laura.
“All I ask is for you to stay still for a few moments,” Laura said, contrary to Michael’s take on her words, she embraced him, taking him by utter surprise. The two felt each other’s warmth, and their beating hearts. “Just… let me stay like this for a while… please,” she whispered to his ears, her voice sounding ragged, as if she was in some form of pain. Soon, Michael could feel Laura’s body convulsing, and then heard her sobbing.
He returned her embrace as his surprise wore off, savouring this short moment, forgetting for a moment his vows. As he felt her tears soaking through his clothes he tightened his embrace, as he tried to comfort her. “You know, if you want, I can go with you. If you want, I mean. Erm, I-”
“There is no merit in going with me… you’re better off with your duties,” Laura answered.
“It is not merit I seek.”
“...What would you want from me? Aside from my affiliations I am powerless.”
“I am not quite sure, myself. I just think that… I think that I would regret not doing so.”
“I think you will regret coming with me, and leaving Iris behind. You have responsibilities here. Forget about me, I am but a half-fox who roamed into the human world.”
“Iris would be safer the farther she is from me. All I do to her is bring her harm,” Michael looked at Laura straight in her eye as he smiled, “You do understand I’d probably just follow you anyway. Besides, I can just make up something when I come back later on. As long as I get that Claudia girl, it’ll be alright!”
“No.” Laura disagreed. “Executioners are supposed to be done in less than a week, you took months on a single prey. It isn’t looking good for you,” Laura claimed, looking back to Michael in the eye, after pulling her head back. “I will let you come in one condition… if you can take Claudia out before the end of my service to the Church, you may come. However, this is under the assumption that I decide to resign.”
“It’s a deal then, Boss.”
“...A-And… d-don’t tell anyone about what I just did, this is more embarrassing than I had imagined, especially after doing it… my apologies, I did something like this without thinking,” Laura said, finally releasing her touch from Michael.
“I think they’d actually have my head if they find out about that.” Michael looked away while scratching the back of his head. “And besides, I liked i- Ahem.”
“...I suppose so, I have done something I should not have. It is not your fault,” Laura said, and frowned, “Why is it that you keep stopping like that? Tell me what you really think.”
“I didn’t mean it like that. I was surprised but it felt special to me, and I liked it. To be completely honest I want to do it again; I want you close to me and never let go.” Michael scratched his nose, blushing. “A-And, I think I am just misinterpreting things. I mean, I really do like you so-” Michael felt the words clumped up in his throat. “I-I’m sorry, I forget our position.”
“...Well, i-it felt nice to me as well, I mean I like you to- wait, what are you making me say?!” Laura exclaimed, her face was so red that Michael could see it despite the faint moonlight. She held her cheeks, embarrassed. She immediately got up and dusted herself. “...You’ll have to excuse me. Good night,” she said, walking away at a brisk pace.
“Wha- hey, wait!” Michael sprang up, chasing Laura. His heart beat felt as heavy as his footsteps as he was chasing her. He was sure that it was wrong for him to feel that way, but when he heard what she said, all his fears were gone. As he caught up to her, he pulled her into an embrace. “Don’t go, please. At least don’t leave for now; tomorrow we might just have to go back to who we are… so, can’t I be selfish just at this moment?”
For Laura, it felt like her heart could explode any moment after the second embrace. Her tears were spent and her mind was clear of most of her griefs for now, for which she was more embarrassed than ever. Love was something she was experiencing for the first time, and she could hardly confirm it due to her inexperience. She tried to push Michael back without thinking, but Michael insistently clung to her.
“What are you, a spoiled child?” Laura said, averting her gaze from Michael, letting her breath out, which allowed her to calm down, even if slightly. “...Just this once.”
“Yeah,” Michael replied, not talking after that. He just closed his eyes and savoured the feeling of their embrace. “Have you ever thought on what you would do there, in the other Realm?”
“I have to attend my mother’s funeral. I am the only member of the family left alive, and I suppose that would be the only reason they want an exiled faerie like me to go back there. Such are traditions,” Laura answered, melancholic. “I don’t even know if I’ll be able to live there in peace, but it might be better than all the chaos going on in here usually. Albeit it’s fun in its own way.”
“Sounds to me that it won’t be good for you to stay there, aside from attending your mother’s funeral I mean,” Michael commented.
“What do you think I should do then? Knights are not allowed to take leave for holidays, that is the kind of job this is,” Laura replied.
“To be completely honest, I think you should go to your mother.” Michael took a deep breath before continuing, “But I don’t think I’d see you again if you do.”
“I don’t know myself, it is my home town but… you did said that you’d come though, didn’t you?” Laura said, but she heaved a sigh. “I suppose you cannot be there forever. Humans are typically not welcome often.”
“I want to and I will, and I’d love to stay there too… But I made a vow to the Church. To God. I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do now.”
“You go back home after the funeral, of course. You should never break your vow to God,” Laura said. “You know what to do already. No need to hesitate for the likes of me.”
Michael sighed and then held Laura by her shoulders. “The likes of me this, the likes of me that. To me, you’re special. Frankly, if it weren’t for my vows, I would- y-you’re special to me, alright? Like Iris! Uh, but, in a different sense from Iris.” Michael felt confident when he started until he fumbled his words.
“...I-I don’t know what to say, thanks?” Laura replied, unsure of her own words too; she looked away from Michael. “Unlike you, I am not a human, and if my identity was found I’d be banished… so, I suppose I am a sinner by lying. What else can I say than †˜the likes of me’?”
“I think your ears look cute, though.” Michael said, while rubbing his chin. He couldn’t seem to forget that time he saw Laura’s ears, and thought it suited her well. Recalling that moment made him forget the bleak conversation they were having.
“T-They… do?” Laura looked back and forth at Michael. Her fox ears appeared on her head as she cancelled her illusion spell.
“Mhmm..” Michael was mesmerized once again by Laura ears as he started touching them.
“I didn’t say that you could touch the- hiaaa-” Laura said, but a strange voice leaked past her lips and she immediately covered her mouth with her hands, her face redder than ever. “Be more gentle…”
“I think God would forgive something as cute as you. Besides, didn’t he say that he’d accept all those who believe in him?” Michael absentmindedly said as he continued to touch Laura’s ears.
“Who knows, He might’ve said that, but the Church doesn’t seem to like other races among their ranks so far,” Laura replied. “Haven’t you touched enough…? They’re very sensitive, you know!”
“Well, you have a point. But to me, I just believe what the Bible said.” Michael stopped touching Laura’s ears. “I guess that’s why I’m just a hunting dog for them.” he said as he shrugged.
“Well, it’s not so bad, you get paid even if you are a hunting dog, and you get to smite heretics. I do not get those jobs anymore except certain occasions, since I am a commander of knights now.”
“Those paperwork do seem threatening. I admire your tenacity.” He joked.
“I am used to them. Being able to receive information on a daily basis is not so bad, either… but keeping up with this society won’t be of much use anymore, I suppose.”
“Can you really not go back with me?” He asked.
“I could, but I’d have lost my only job in human society by then. I don’t know what else I can do here.”
Michael held Laura’s hands and gave them a squeeze, “Maybe live in peace, with me and Iris?”
Laura pulled her hands away, shaking her head. “Where, exactly, in the Church? After resigning from them I refuse to burden them again, that includes you and Iris.”
“I’m sure we can find something! And besides, you will never be a burden. Or do you dislike to be here?” Michael worriedly asked.
“As long as I don’t earn my keep and work I’d be a burden, human society is rather complex, I don’t know what else I can do for them. Mn… no, I do not dislike being here, which is strange because I missed the fresh air and the sky back in the Faerie Realm when I came down here first, but I suppose I have adjusted.”
“I think with your qualifications, you would have an easy time to find a job.”
“Qualifications, you say? And that would be?”
“Well, you’re a Knight, aren’t you?”
“And?”
“And. What are Knights good at again?”
“...Fighting? This isn’t going in a good direction… ”
“Well, it’s okay, we’ll find an answer sooner or later! Ha ha ha!”
“You have fun with that, priest. I am out for the night, I predict the answer will be found after a century at the latest,” Laura said, pushing Michael away along with his grasp, and walking off, Michael saw that she wore a tense frown on her face before she took off. It’d be near impossible to continue any conversation now.
“That did not go well.” He sighed, scratching the back of his head. He spent a few minutes laying on the grass before he headed of to the Church himself.
