Mildly depressing story with a happy ending. Choppy writing is purposeful.
She enters her bathroom. The panes of the mirrored cabinet fog with the heat of the bath she has drawn. She pulls off the clothes that she has worn for the last week. They cling stubbornly to her sweat slicked body. When she tries to pull off her socks she slips on the second one. She lands hard on her knees and whimpers.
The tiles seem to ring with the force. She does not cry out, even with the pain in her legs. She merely stands herself up shakily, holding back tears as she slips into the bathwater. The bath is overfull, and water flows over the edges onto the already wet tiles. The water tinges red from the blood on the floor. Blood that is now turning the tub water crimson. She knows of the blood. It stems from the cuts on her forearms.
She made them right after she started the tub with the big long kitchen knife she used to use for steak. She settles down as she slips into sweet serenity. As her vision fogs she becomes aware of someone standing above her. Her first thought is to cover her naked body, but as her vision clears that sinks to the back of her mind.
A man stands before her nearly as naked as she is. He wears nothing but a small white towel around his waist. He looks so familiar to her that it hurts her brain to think about it. She blinks and rubs her eyes as her gaze shifts upwards. Alabaster wings spread from somewhere on his back. Small drops of dew fall from the tips of the bird like feathers. She meets his eyes, Icy blue and commanding. He beckons for her to stand. She does so, but falls as she steps out of the bath. He catches her, wrapping both his arms and the giant wings around her. Her head barely reaches his chin, and he rests it in her hair. She feels revitalized in his arms. She forgets the tub, the cuts, even the long knife.
“So soon” he says with a sigh. His voice is a symphony of wondrous sound. She is confused for a moment, and he leads her through the hallway. She doesn’t have the nerve to ask where they are going. What blood is left in her body rushes to her face as she realizes that she is still in the nude. This revelation comes with another. Her cuts have stopped bleeding, and look as if they are beginning to heal. As they approach the door the man appears to notice this as well. He cocks an eyebrow and his mouth curls into a small smile.
The man opens the front door and pulls her a little too hard. His hand slips free of hers and she tumbles out the open door. He floats back and up to the sky. “Not today after all” he says happily. Fear replaces her previous emotions as she tumbles into the darkness. She feels like she will fall forever. Like her mind is on the edge of a great precipice. All of a sudden it is quiet.
She hears nothing except for a light breathing and the beep of a heart monitor. Her eyelids feel like prison bars, but she forces them open. The light is blinding at first, but dims as her eyes adjust. Before her sits the man.
The wings are gone and his eyes are full of tears instead of the command they had before. Her own eyes fill with tears as she remembers. This is her husband. He had gone missing a year ago. She had given up on him being found. She was ready to take her own life for a chance to meet him afterwards.
He smiles through his tears, wiping his eyes with his free hand. The other clings tightly to hers, as if she would be carried away if he let go. Her angel. She smiles with all the force she can muster and opens her arms to him. He nearly falls forward off his chair and embraces her. “I’ll never be gone again” he sobs.
He tells her how the police had found him in a drug raid of his kidnapper’s house. He had returned home as fast as they would let him. When he arrived he heard the bath running and found her near dead in the tub. He had rushed her to the hospital and had been there all night with her in case she woke up. She put a finger to his mouth as he began to explain when they would be able to leave. She just wanted to revel in this moment. He happily obliges. They have all the time in the world.
