Here's one of my short stories. tell me what you you think.
The day was beautiful, the sun shining down as if it had just discovered its true reason for living. Its beams caused shadows to stretch languidly across the Earth. At the corner of fifth and walnut a small coffee shop was enjoying the boom it received from the beauty of the day, and the businessmen coming for lunch. It was a smallish shop, nothing particularly special about it to separate it from the other shops in the area. The barista had a few piercings and looked somewhat bored as he leaned on a counter filled with fresh muffins. The waitress was young and cute, she desperately wanted to be an actress but a stunning lack of talent prevented her from doing so. They had both been there for a few hours and secretly despaired at another uneventful afternoon. And then two new customers walked in
The first man to enter was tall and blonde; the way he was built was better described as beautiful than handsome. He wore a smart business suit with a red shirt, blood red tie and black pants, all of which were of course custom made. He arrived and asked, in an almost melodious voice, for a table out in the sun and that he would be meeting a friend shortly for business, so a table for two would be most appreciated. The waitress while trying to keep herself from swooning and falling over, somehow directed to a table that had conveniently just opened up.
The second man arrived shortly afterwards. He was tall and had brown hair, which he wore somewhat long, as well as the beginnings of a beard. He wore worn Blue Jeans and a simple T-Shirt, on his feet were a pair of well-worn leather sandals and hanging around his neck was a small wooden cross. He approached the waitress and told her, in a voice that could be best described as soothing, that he was meeting a friend of his. After giving her a description, she told him that he arrived shortly before he did, and that she would show him to the table.
The first man stood as the second arrived, they shook hands in the way of old friends seeing each other for the first time in a very long while. They sat down together. Before they began talking, the first man waved the waitress over to them. They ordered their coffee, the well dressed man taking his black, the second with cream, sugar and a just a squeeze of lemon. When their waitress left, they began their conversation. Beginning with the basic small talk, they discussed the weather, recent achievements, brief stories, some of which was gossip.
After a short period through their discussion, the well-dressed man leaned over towards the other and began to speak. “Let’s stop this”, he said, “You know there’s a reason I called you down here, you can’t come to my place, and There’s no way I’m going near yours, so why don’t I just get straight to business.” He leaned back into his seat and folded his hands, “It’s quite simple, I can’t take it anymore, I quit, I’m out, I’m done, no more. I’ve been doing the same damn thing for far too long and I’m through.” The other man paused and let out a sigh as he looked at his opposite and said. “Listen Lucifer, I know you’ve been doing this for a long time, and I know it’s hard, but it’s only for a little while longer, you’ve gone this far, surely you can hold out for just a little bit more.”
Lucifer looked a bit taken aback at this news, he obviously expected a different response. He thought of the work he had done, and the respite that he would not receive. After a stunned pause he resumed his argument. “You don’t understand, there’s no way you can understand, you sit on a gilded throne in your silver city, I burn my ass on a chair of bone in the infernal pit. You hear singing while I’m serenaded by screams, you receive the thanks of the enraptured saved, and I’m witness only to the suffering of the damned and the perverse pleasure of their tormentors. Please, this is torment for me as well, give me rest, there must be others willing, no desperate, to serve as your opposite. What of the demons I command? Perhaps Beelzebub, the lord of the flies, he would massacre for what I unwilling rule.” God looked at his other and said, “Not he, or any of his brethren would be fitting, for that very reason.” Lucifer searched for another example, desperation wavering his melodic voice, “what of the others among the fallen, surely one of them would be suitable for rule, what of my former standard bearer, Azazel, surely he would be right.” “No,” God said, “he is not nearly powerful enough to keep your legions under control. You were my greatest creation, you were designed to serve as my opposite, you are my shadow, the evil to my good, it must be you, no other can fill the position.
When he heard this Lucifer became angry, he rose quickly and with such force that the chair he was sitting on was sent skittering across the floor. He began to shout and curse his opposite. “Why do you force this upon me, I didn’t ask for this position, I am no volunteer. I was given a job which I performed to the best of my ability, and now I’m done. I have rebelled against you once; tell me why I should not do so again.” God began to speak, but Lucifer screamed in rage, his eyes glowing like embers, “I will not speak with you anymore, I will stand against you, you twisted old bastard.” At this he stood tall and flipped the table in his rage, plates, cups and hot liquids flew through the air as Lucifer stormed out of the small coffee shop.
God relaxed into his undisturbed chair, he remade his cup, and began to sip the warm, fragrant coffee. He made a brief gesture and immediately everyone surrounding him had forgotten what had just happened. All they had seen was two men get into a heated argument. God raised his hand, and when the waitress came over, he asked for his check. He quietly sipped his coffee, and a knowing smile began to spread across his face.
