There was a noise, rather-- noises. Loud thumps, deafening screams, and shouting, all in which can be heard from another room. She and her fellow knights were awakened by the distant racket, thankful that it wasn't her enduring such a crude and grotesque punishment. She let out a sigh of both relief and weariness and walked to a window to gaze at the moon. "Was all this worth it?" She asked herself.
Chapter 1: Oppression
"Luna...! Come on Marcell, wake up!" Said a voice. "Hey!"
Luna's eyes slowly opened to meet the gaze of her long time friend, Jasmine Reiss. Groggy, she staggers to her feet and stretches. Giving Jasmine a puzzled look, she groans loudly. "C'mon, Jas' its my birthday!" She whined.
"Quit whining Marcell, you should be working, not dozing off." Jasmine said, scolding Luna. With a flip of her lengthy green hair, she hands Luna a shovel. "C'mon now, get to it, slave." She teased, making a whipping sound with her mouth.
Luna has been friends with Jasmine since backing her in a fight when they were children. Regardless of their rather slim stature, the girls' strength surpass any man's.
After a long, hard day's work, Luna took refuge in the barn to take a seat on a bail of hay to rest.
"Yeah, this is exactly how I pictured my birthday, aching bones, awesome gift."
Jasmine entered and took a seat next to Luna. "Come to torture me some more, boss?" Luna quipped sarcastically. Jasmine snorted. "I guess you don't want your birthday gift I used the extra money to get." She said, pulling out a white box. Luna’s eyes lit up, she took the box and eagerly opened it, pulling out a long white scarf.
“Jas’, I love it!” She said while happily wrapping the scarf around her neck. With a smile, Luna hugged Jasmine in appreciation.
"Don't sweat it." Jasmine replied. Leaning back on the stacked up bails of hay, she popped an unfamiliar question to Luna, "So, you're 18 now," She said. "What are you planning to do once you leave home?"
Luna didn't hear the question, she was more focused on the scarf than listen to Jasmine. She had this contempt look on her face with slightly rosey cheeks almost covered by locks of her long, silver hair. She waved her hand in front of Luna's face to gain her attention. "Hello~, are you listening, Marcell?" She said. Luna jolted out of her trance to acknowledge Jasmine, then the question came to mind; "what are you planning to do once you leave home?" Luna thought long and hard about it. She snapped her fingers in astonishment, as she figured out what she wanted, she turned to Jasmine and grabbed her by the shoulders and exclaimed, "I wanna join the Cursed Army and fight the Scion!
Jasmine's eyes grew wide at Luna's rash response. She knew Luna was a strong girl but she never thought she would gain the courage to work under a posh army. "Lunie, are you...sure you wanna do that?"
"I'm positive! People don't give us enough credit, I wanna show everyone how strong I am, to travel the world, to go on adventures!" She exclaimed.
Jasmine giggled at Luna's proclamation. "Well, your sense of adventure certainly didn't disappear, that's for sure."
Luna wanted to retaliate but was interrupted by the ringing of town bells and the cries of eager villagers. “They’re here! The knights are here!” yelled the villagers scurrying to the village gates as a line of knights on horses passed through a highway of gazes from the villagers.
However, the knights returned with dead eyes; their heads down to avoid sending the villagers the obvious message that their mission, as expected, was a failure. These were the ones who managed to make it out unscathed, however. The wounded were carried back in a horse-driven carriage. Some lost eyes, some were lucky enough to lose fingers, most lost arms and legs, and the bottom halves of their bodies. It was a satirical blood bath.
Luna and Jasmine rushed past the crowd to watch the knights make their way to the castle. Luna wore a face of excitement as she watched, while Jasmine stood uninterested from the slightest.
"Lunie, these guys make me uneasy, I'm gonna leave." Jasmine said while easing her way out of sight. Luna waved goodbye to her and continued watching.
The man leading the charge had red and gold decorated armor, he was out of place compared to the other soldiers and had a gruff disposition. "That must be the big hat of the army." Luna thought to herself, interested. Noticing the wounded soldiers, make their way past, Luna knew that the army's defeat was imminent as the numbers dwindled slowly everyday.
Upon arriving home that night, Luna came in to a barrage of greetings from her grandparents. The atmosphere was roomy but strangely tense. Furniture was either missing or knocked over and majority of the hut was damaged. Luna was led to believe the warm welcome and smiles from her family was only a facade.
"So...did Sir Aldo stop by?" Luna said to break the silence, her grandparents both sighed in relief. "He's a madman." Grandpa said so rashly.
"Came here looking for money, saying it was a contribution to the military, he says. When we told him that we paid him last week, he trashed the house!" He exclaimed. "Who knows what he'll do next." Said grandma in a frightened tone.
For months some undesirable knights come down to the commons to harass the villagers for their food and for what little money they have. They say that its for a good and meaningful cause. And when they refuse, or give a reason otherwise, they use violence to get what they want. Luna felt angry at this, it gives her another reason to join the military, so she can get enough money to get her grandparents out of poverty.
She grabbed her grandparent's hands and brought them close. "You two won't have to worry about them anymore, because I'm going to join the Cursed army to fight the Scion and get you out of here." She proclaimed.
They gasped suddenly, but not in a happy manner, they scolded Luna and told stories of the military, and none of them good. "We don't want that life for you, sweetie. They may be the ones protecting us but they live like savages" they said. However Luna did not acknowledge their warnings, instead she pretended to listen. "Right, okay I got it." She snarled as she stormed into to her room in anger.
Luna was angered at the notion that her grandparents can stand being pushed around like animals. However, she thought this was a matter to deal with in the morning.
