Moonlight Assassin
A King/Soul story
Chapter 1
Summer came early that year. Even in the darkness of night, the heat held its bite. It was business as usual in the Nation’s Capital, heat or no heat. People heading home from a long day of work, others were leaving for the night shift and so on. The Cherry Blossom Festival was still a few days away so there were not many tourists yet.
A small section of Eastern Avenue’s sidewalk was closed off by yellow Police Tape. A single Police Cruiser and Ambulance sat in front, their sirens off.
I sighed and put my hands in my pockets and walked over. I produced my “I’m from the Government so fuck off” badge to the officer. Poor kid nearly panicked. Must be a newbie who never had to deal with a Government Official before. The rookie cop looked behind me and stammered “A-and you, ma’am?”
I looked behind me to see a gorgeous Chinese woman pull out her own badge. She wore her shoulder length black hair in a loose ponytail. She was clad is a loose T-shirt that stated: “Mornings are Evil” in big, R.L Stein font. She had added blue jeans to complete her ensemble. Neither clothing did a thing to hide her amazing figure.
It was pretty obvious she had just got out of bed. Either that or she was purposely wearing the t-shirt as an opposite to my own short sleeved white dress shirt and black tie. Maybe she was just acting the †˜rebel’ to my †˜conformity’.
Her lovely Jade eyes glared at the rookie cop as she said, “I’m with him”
With that, she walked up next to me. I grinned at my wife.
“You know, Mingyu…” I began, but she cut me off.
“I swear to Nuwa, Sean. Finish that sentence and you get a sword to the knee.”
“Yes, dear” I said, unable to hide my grin.
As we walked up to the police tape, a rotten barbecue smell found its way into my nose. It was…a rough scent to get used to. My grin faded as we got to the cause of the not-so wonderful smell. It was so burnt that you could hardly call it a corpse anymore. It was more charred skeleton than anything. It used to be a male, I think.
“So who ordered their Vampire extra crispy?” the man kneeling behind the corpse joked. The man had messy black hair and the stubble on his chin made him look ruggedly handsome. His suit was like mine, only all black. His grey eyes were smiling up at us.
I heard Mingyu sigh and say something in Mandarin that was rude, but not false. My grinned widened at my old friend.
“Marcus. I am shocked you have never used that joke before!”
“I know, right!? You would have thought after all these centuries I would have dealt with Bar-B-Qued Vampire. But NOPE! This is a new one for me!” His happy grin faded a little at his next words, “It is like the other two. Looks like we have ourselves a serial killer. This poor chap is Guo Ling, I think. Poor bastard.”
I raised an eyebrow, “One of Liu’s Enforcers? Is this one has been set up to look like a Werewolf attack as well?”
Marcus nodded. I knelt down and examined the charred vamp. Four diagonal lines were carved into the vampire’s torso, looking exactly like a wound a giant wolf could inflict. Except for the fact that they were far too neat and clean to be made by real claws.
I sighed, “This one is sloppy too…But why burn him afterwards?”
“Maybe he watched too many movies and did not know vamps turned to ash when they died, so he panicked and burned the poor bastard instead. And also, look at this”
Marcus lifted the chin and I saw it instantly. There was a wound under the chin obviously made by a blade.
“Let me guess, it leads up to the brain?”
“Yup! This was the killing blow. The chest wounds, I think, are just for show.”
“Sloppy…” I growled again.
“Yup. Makes you wonder why someone would bother trying to set the Vamps and Wolves up at all.”
Contrary to what Hollywood wants you to think, Werewolves and Vampires have never been to war with each other. Hell, they do not even dislike each other. There are some rouge factions sure, but in the main hierarchy of both there are measures in place to make damn sure that what Hollywood thinks would happen, will not happen. Even here in DC, they are strong allies. Liu Fang, the leader of the Vampires, and Madam Hilde the Blood-Fang have a tightly bound friendship.
It will not surprise me to see Hilde come to Liu’s aid at a time like this. I have known Liu for ages now, and he is not the kind of man to take the deaths of one of his men lightly.
I sighed again, “Someone is going to have to tell Liu…”
“Ninja-Girl is most likely telling him now.”
“Ah!”, I said elegantly, “Well at least Arigatami will be able to talk him down if he gets pissed.”
“Yeah, She will probably use her patented Arigatami-glare on him. Seriously, you got to respect someone who can even scare vampires.”
“She is tiny but fierce”, I agreed.
That was when Mingyu chimed in, "The question is, why do such a think at all? Why bother trying to set the werewolves up if it is so sloppy? And if they wanted to spark a war between the Vampires and Werewolves, why kill a human with mediocre magical abilities at best and a A Grave Ghoul?"
I shrugged, thinking back to the other two victims. Some poor woman with only enough arcane power to cast a minor fire spell or talk to the recently dead. The Grave Ghoul, while not as innocent a victim as the Mage, all the same he only snacked on the dead supernatural. He would never dare harm a Human.
"Maybe the killer hates the preternatural or is a religious zealot." I suggested.
"Or maybe they are just fuck-nut insane", Marcus chimed in.
"Or that, yeah" I agreed.
Mingyu nodded, "I suppose." She went into her pocket and got out a Bluetooth headset and put it to her ear.
"Ginkiba I need you to start checking around the National Mall."
I raised an eyebrow at that, "Why the National Mall?"
"The Sakura Festival. What better place to find other victims especially when he or she is aiming for the pretanatural."
Which made sense. Why didn't I think of that, damn it?
I stood up, looking at Marcus, "You got this?"
He nodded, "Yeah. Some of Liu's guys should be here soon to take care of the body"
I smiled at my wife, "Well time to visit Liu"
