[Valentine 2014] What is Love?

First things first, baby don't hurt me. Got that out of the way... Now, I was originally going to do a poem (and I probably still will) but then it morphed into, well, this. Enjoy

What is love?

[size=12]The world is aflame with the passion of love. As I sit here feeling the pain and despair of loneliness, I know that this world is filled with people who live their days with that special someone. They tell me that my special someone is out there, waiting. What if they aren't? What if I'm sitting here, damned to be alone for the rest of my days? The thought terrifies me. Even the brief glimpse in my mind at my lonely life is enough to push into a deep depression. I have no job, no friends, no lover, no family. Everyone I talk to turns away in disgust. They find me unattractive or weird or creepy. I'm not. I'm none of those things. I'm just a man searching for love in this cold and dark world. Love is a difficult thing to find. Love is a concept many don't understand, but somehow know that they are "in love". I've never been in love, I've never even liked anyone. Why would such a meaningless emotion exist? Love is a temporary luxury that can only end in heartache and despair. Then why? Why do I feel this way? Why do I feel like I need companionship? This something deep inside of me telling me that love will make everything better. Why must it torture me? People flaunt their love in public, it disgusts me. You have to show you're love in front of complete strangers to feel good about yourselves? What about the strangers? Have they found that love? Has it been torn away by deceit or death? Then that one day: Valentines Day. My least favorite and my favorite holiday. People in public making out on park benches, hotels with no available rooms, heart shaped balloons and bouquets of roses. The only good thing to come out of it is the discount chocolate the next day. For all the loners it is a day of sitting inside their homes playing video games or reading. No loners ever leave the house on Valentines Day. They are looked down upon on such a holy, love-filled day. They can't go to any restaurant or movie theater, or out into public at all. They are considered strange for not having a girl/boyfriend on that holy day. That holy day which I despise. The love that's waiting for me doesn't exist. Every time I face that truth I die inside. I lose all meaning to live. What's the point? Is love waiting for me down the long road of life? I guess I'll get back to you on that...[/h]

Ah yes, Singles Awareness Day.

I'm not a fan of the format you've chosen for this (one big block of text), but it's nice. Kinda depressing, but nice. I was expecting something alone the lines of a dissection of the word and its meanings, but it turned out to be much more personal than that.

The only good thing to come out of it is the discount chocolate the next day.


Never thought of that before.

it struck me as an eye-opening message about the over-glorification of Valentine's day, and the despicable notion of love and how it actually hurts a lot more instead of healing our wounds. kinda know that feel since I'm a loner myself.

in that way, since I could relate to the monologue, I find myself to like this piece. nice work.

I will try to find a job. Get some friends underworld. Buy some slaves. Fuck the slaves, make her pregnant. And BOOM! Got a daughter.

Still no lover, but at least you get all the others.


Btw, that was fun. I love how everyone is going gloomy and all for valentine.

I can't speak for the others but for me it's because I'm single and damn unhappy about it. I would be very very hard pressed to write a straight up story where two lovers just get together and find happiness.

This piece elicits the feelings I get after reading an Edgar Allan Poe excerpt. I don't take to a written catharsis of one's feelings unless there are written by megalomaniacs and madmen. leonard267 thinks that it needs more negativity (even though it is negative already) This really reminds me of what I usually write but more serious.

Relevation, you ought to read McGonagall's poems and his diaries about his exploits cooking bacon and cleaning his house! You will then write like leonard267. leonard267 would have you know that he really wants to parody and satirise it. In fact he already did!

What comes into your mind when you look at your calendar only to find that today is the 14th of February? I can't read minds but if you are living in the West (sans Australasia), chances are it would be the 15th of February from where I come from. While others are celebrating this accursed festival of romance, a concept that is a vaguely defined, supposedly hormone driven, clouds what could otherwise be good judgement and potentially ruinous, I find it near impossible to celebrate that day.

The 15th of February marks a God-forsaken event that would be known to be one of the darkest events in history when a foreign invader decided to set up shop on my territory. What followed was an orgy of rape, pillage, economic devastation and endemic malnutrition. It was an occupation that can only be described as tyrannical rule if one were to be lenient. I am of course referring to the hypothetical scenario if I let these silly feelings of romance get the better of me and end up with a woman that would ruin the lives of me and many others.
