I completely disagree with that. No business posting it online, maybe, but a lot of people (myself included) like writing just for pure enjoyment. Most people who give harsh reviews are trying to help the person improve, but then we have the LOL I TROLL U HARD jackasses who say things just to be assholes and make the person feel like shit.


I said serious critique for a reason. A troll is not a serious critique.

But neither is "OMG! Awesome work!"

And writing is based on communication emotions and feelings with your stories. That is the purpose of writing something. If you aren't writing to communicate then you aren't really writing.

Takerial, I'm not ignoring your reply (I will get to it,) but I'd like to see what exactly these reviews contain.

This is a story that both myself and a friend of mine teamed up on. We've had tons of fun writing it, and people seemed to like it. Yes, it has the occasional grammar mistake and random weird issues (some of which I've tried to go back and fix,) but overall we've had positive input.

So please do.

BUT I DO ASK: PLEASE read more than one chapter before giving your opinion.

If you'd like to get better at reading comprehension, it helps to understand the flow of words as best as possible. Try reading aloud if you lose focus, or even just because. Try to put your attention on the flow of the writing and whether or not it sounds appropriate. When I read, I read word-for-word and so I catch a lot of small errors, but that's nothing that editing won't fix. When it comes to the actual story and content, pay attention to tense of speech and description, as well as emotions conveyed and subconscious intent. That's mainly what I look for, and although it may sound complex, it all comes rather naturally for me.

Start with basic short stories, and sit and go "What is wrong with this story?"

Think about it in terms of characters. Do they have a lot of depth? Are they believable? What are their strengths? Their weaknesses? Do they invoke emotion in me? What role do they play?

Plot. Does everything flow together? Is the story realistic? Is there anything that happens that is confusing? Does it seem overwritten for what it is trying to accomplish? Was it easy to get, or did it actually stay hidden while still connecting everything?

Description. Is there too much description? Too little? Is it purple prose? Does the description work for what is being described?


Awesome. To sum it up, I've got to get some motivation and read as much as possible. Thanks a lot for the suggestions!
