Your opinion on Fanfiction

Well, I've been planning to ask this poll for a while now and never got around to it.
A couple of my friends enjoy and write fanfics, and a few other of my friends oppose them, and say they ruin the topic that is being written about.

In my personal opinion, I enjoy reading fanfics every now and again when I have the time, and base my opinion on them depending if they're good, or just plain rubbish.

To hate on all fanfiction because of a few bad eggs is akin to hating all ice cream because of pistachio, or all anime because of a bad English dub, or all porn because of a shitty 80s cam with piss poor acting, or all men because of one rapist, or all movies because of The Godfather Part 3.

I think it's as you say, base your opinion on them depending on what they are as individual stories by individual people. To hate them simply because they are based on unoriginal backgrounds is a juvenile conclusion to make because nearly nothing is original these days. Everyone grabs inspiration from somewhere and everything must be based on concepts that the human mind can understand.

Although I am a firm believer that a truly creative writer will eventually be able to break off from writing fanfiction in order to write more "original" premises, there is nothing wrong with writing fanfiction...unless it's solely to turn vampires into sparkling vegetarians...or to write off Modern Warefare soldiers as homosexuals just because...but even then, you must rate the stories according to your personal opinion on them as individuals and not as an entirety.

It really depends, If its on Canon with the original, if it hasn't already been thought up, and if its written well.
I have hardly read any FanFiction, only a few things that have been recommended to me by friends.

Also, Do WebComics count as FanFiction? I've only read fully though 2 or 3, the rest just never seem to be anything intresting, or generally bad characters.

Getting back on topic, I see nothing wrong with fanfiction, provided there is some disclaimer or credit given to the original series, characters, etc. Fanfiction may be a good way for budding writers to hone their writing skills and at the same time, make their fantasy of a particular series come to live.

However, from the viewpoint of producers, authors, etc, they may feel that their copyrights are being infringed.

I like pistachio. Other than that, I pretty much agree with you. Since I have written Fanfictions and original stories I understand what you mean. When writing a Fanfiction, there is a whole lot of things that don't need to be set since you know them and your readers are supposed to too(There is not much of a point to read a Fanfiction of a fiction you don't know). But it makes it easier to create interesting stories.

Also, you can like the characters of a fiction without liking that fiction's story or the way it's told. So, I don't think Fanfictions ruin anything, they are just alternatives with the same characters.

Are you a frigging psychic? I was thinking of writing a Fanfic just this morning!! It's about a what if scenario of Kiritsugu and Irisviel in Fate Zero leading to the events of Fate Stay Night and of course later about the whole of Heavens Feel 5.

I think Fan fic is cool. I don't like some of them but it's cool to see a good one when you're looking around.

Yeah, one of my aforementioned friends received an angry email from Shonen Jump, asking them to remove a fanfic from the site they were posting on, due to the fact that they didn't include disclaimers...

I always thought about Fanfictions as writing pieces which carves out your fantasies of what's being written about, when we become a fan of something; we tend to think about it quite a lot for a certain period of time. If the writer can properly write out what he imagines about the series being wrote about, then I think it'd be really nice to see the amount of creativity it may be able to demonstrate.

Isn't it kind of being a little too nit-picky ? I mean, it is true that one should always announce it clearly when one's work isn't completely his. But We're still talking about something fan-made, if anything, it advertises the original work.

Yeah, apparently it wasn't just them though, it was everyone and anyone who posted a Jump fanfic without disclaimers.

I'd really wish that the author of any fanfiction could give me a proper background on what he or she is parodying before going into the story proper, perhaps in a spoiler. Fanfiction that is well written should not be that much of a problem.

A good fanfic is even more rare than a good original piece. Capturing a full character through what is observed is difficult--nigh on impossible--because you don't know the full character, only what has been seen. There may be accurate portrayals, sure, but nothing compared to what can be done with a fully-realized original character.

If the fanfic only uses the world of its inspiration then quality becomes more circumstantial, but I lack the experience reading them to give a half-educated response.

I have never read a fanfiction I liked, nor have I ever liked my own fanfiction.

That would depend on the understanding of the character itself I believe. True, we as fans would only be able to understand the character through what was shown to us but that's where research comes into play. With research and internet, I believe that we can portray the character as close to the original as possible.

And yes I do agree that a good FanFic is ultra rare much rarer than a good original story but I have come across a few good(or at least decent) ones that was worth the read. Sorry but I don't have a link since this was quite a few years ago. I haven't read a Fanfic in a while now.

Now, leaving that matter aside, I actually want to know the more detailed writing rules here in FAKKU. I want to know what we may write and what we must not write about, what is the limitation of the topic in the story or fanfiction, and lastly...

Do you think it is allowable to write a fiction with a character INSPIRED (not trully based on) from real living people? I mean if you change the minor details and the names of the said so person in the story, is it still illegal?

To tell you honestly I live far away outside USA so I don't know the rules there because it's okay to write a character inspired from real people in my country as long as it doesn't damage the reputation of the person.

I haven't seen a rule that says no so I guess it's okay and Jacob posted a translation of a 2ch thread recently so I'm guessing it's a go.

And I agree that this should have another thread but hey. It's all good.

Well depends on kind of fanfiction. There might be one where the main cast is a main cast but there are those who just borrow the universe or some side characters and develop them further. I personally like the second kind of fanfic because as you copy the main cast you might fail to grasp the character's personality the same way as author.
