It's the summer of your senior year in college. Get fit, study, be artistic; level up your character and make the most out of your daily life. Experience a truly classic relationship simulation with the re-release of this PC-98 cult classic. We wish you all the luck...and may you find True Love.
True Love was released by Japanese developer Software House Parsley for the NEC PC-98 in 1995. Four years later, the game was localized for Windows 95 and released in the U.S. and Europe by Otaku Publishing. Despite its popularity, the game has been in licensing limbo and only available to play through unofficial sources... UNTIL NOW!
The Re-Release
The majority of work put into the re-release of True Love '95 involved uncovering the existing license holders so that fans can support this classic for its 25th anniversary. There are some known issues with the game we have identified below and on the Community Hub.
The Story
The main character is a single, nineteen-year-old Japanese college senior living in the city of Meiai, forced out by his parents at the idea that independence may attract him a partner. With no direction and unsure of his future, the player embarks on a quest to define themselves and find a person to love. The game is played through a series of days consecutively spanning three months.
At the start of each morning, players designate an activity to pursue for evening, night, and in the case of weekends or vacation, daytime. Each choice impacts the overall profile of the player and points are distributed across stats for passion, appearance, fatigue, scholarship, strength, and art. Depending on the level of these stats, and the order of schedules made during particular days, the player will shift their romantic focus and possibly trigger events and encounters with other characters.
The Known Issues
We want everyone to be informed of known issues with the game ahead of purchasing. Due to the age of the game, these are the issues that may impact modern systems.
†¢ There is a 2-3 second delay on modern systems when loading MIDI tracks.
Game not loading? Try setting the compatibility mode for the .exe file to Windows 98 or Windows XP. You can do this by right clicking on T_LOVE95.EXE, select the Compatibility tab, click the "Run this program in compatibility mode for", and select the Windows version.
FAKKU is working to fix these issues, but given the age of the game and the loss of the original source code (both the original Japanese and English releases), we are not confident these issues will be resolved. Additional information can be found on the forums.
Not having much luck when I tried to run the game. I've ran it in compatibility mode as suggested, but not seeing it run except in task manager. Any other suggestions? I was looking forward to playing, so I'm a little disappointed that I encountered this issue. Well, part of the risk of playing older games I suppose.
I had this same issue when I first installed it, the game would run in the background on task manager but would never actually open regardless of any strategies I tried.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   In my case, I simply uninstalled and then reinstalled the game and have had no subsequent problems, the game will now boot up successfully without needing to use compatability mode or any other workarounds. I can only guess at the cause but I think perhaps something with the anti-virus warnings borked up the install on the first go, in any case try reinstalling first and see if that does the trick.
Decent visual novel/dating sim with resource management
The game was very enjoyable but can be very repetitive or grindy. I played the game without any prior knowledge and fumbled my way through the game for the most part.
It felt like a resource management game since you have different attributes that increase or decrease depending on what you do. This is how you trigger different events in the game. I was able to get the ending for several of the different characters in my first play through, but if you want certain characters you have to commit to learning what starts their events.
I definitely enjoyed it my first play through but it can get old trying to unlock all the scenes.
I really wanted to enjoy replaying this, but the delay when loading MIDI tracks is beyond annoying. If it were really only a 2-3 second delay I wouldn't mind, but it's always between 5-8 seconds. This could be fixed by modding the game so that it loads MP3 versions of the MIDI tracks instead, but I don't know how possible that is without the source code.
Edit: After trying a few different compatibility modes, now it won't even run! It doesn't even appear in Task Manager, it just doesn't open at all.
