Not sure I agree with the "Monster Girl" tag (no spoilers for those who haven't read it yet). As for my personal response to this story, I got three options:
1) "Well Isn't That Cute? ... BUT IT'S RIGHT!"
2) "Ah, What A Fine Day For Science."
Lol. I would like to see the story continue on with these characters. I don’t think we have enough vanilla stories where the main character is a/the “Monster Girl”. I can already picture an outdoor date/shopping chapter, a bathing chapter, and a chapter dealing with Chrona breaking down due to her upgrades.
The "Monster Girl" tag is inappropriate, and should be applied only
to demi-humans and supernatural creatures. Instead, this chapter
needs the "Sexbot / Android" tag (which Fakku doesn't have, yet).
They could make a “Non-Human” tag to cover a wider range and then use tags like “Monster Girl”, “Android”, “Elf”, etc. to narrow down the description. Maybe once there are enough stories with androids the tag will be added. The problem that the current tags have are with gender neutral tags. For example: “Succubus”, “Monster Girl”, “Ugly Bastard”, and “Femboy” by their definition apply to specific genders. But tags like “Elf”, “Teacher”, “Dark Skin, “Muscles”, or even the suggested “Android” leave it vague as to what gender these tags apply towards. For now I am fine with the use of “Monster Girl” as a colloquial term for non-human female characters.
Wow. This quickly rocketed towards being, for me, one of the best sumiya's work, if not the best. The last page surely makes feelings of loneliness to come afloat, seeing how her passion and love were the result of mere calculations, after all. However, if Shuuichi came to love Chrona, it was because of everything they shared since she was created. If every past event that created that special bond between them was, as well, an "automatic reaction", I refuse to believe this can't be considered actual love.
On page 6, panel 2, Chrona says she's unable to answer any questions
regarding her preferences, which makes perfect sense. As an unliving
android, she has no personal tastes, which are entirely subjective and
beyond the scope of a machine.
If her birthday is the same as his it raises all kinds of questions in my sci fi adleded brain. Is she technically 2 years old? Would that age matter if she has an adults cognitive ability? How much would she change herself to please him? If he was gay would she exchange her pussy for a penis? Is she a slave? If she is his property does she truly have any free will? How much of her personality can he control? If he got a girlfriend could he turn off her sex drive? What about her memories? Is sex with maid-bots considered weird in their culture? I assume it isn't that weird as she got a major change done without his knowledge. But how was it paid for? Did she dip into his bank account to pay for it or did she bargin hunt for cheap good and save on her own? Did his parents pay? If they did was it viewed as a "necessary evil" to get their son some "experience" or was it just a present. I could go on, but I won't, but I could.
I commend you for taking a "deep dive" into this chapter. You have raised
many good questions---for which there are precious few answers.
As an unliving android, Chrona was manufactured instead of being born,
so she doesn't really have a birthday (unless you count the day she was
completed and activated). While she may be (objectively) two-years-old,
that's irrelevant since she was created in adult form. Also, as a machine
that can be repaired, she's immune to aging, so birthdays are meaningless.
Chrona cannot change her breast size or other external physical features.
(page 17, panel 2)
Chrona took it upon herself to "upgrade" her genitals (page 12, panel 4),
so she apparently has some degree of free will. How she arranged the
procedure and paid for it is a mystery, though.
Chrona constantly fine-tunes her responses as she interacts with Shuuichi,
so he unconsciously influences her personality all the time---and she influ-
ences him, too.
(page 18, panel 4)
Sexroid porn exists in this world, so I assume sexroid prostitutes exist, too.
When androids are perfected in our own world, they will absolutely be used
as sex workers. In fact, that will be their primary function.
Sexbot stories are always fascinating, because
mangaka like to play with the trope and create
different variations. Compare this chapter with
Minagiiri's Let's Play with Lily (which is sexier,
funnier, and more light-hearted), and Hishigata
Tomaru's Apartment Maid (which is darker and
more poignant, in a subtle, tragicomic way).
Ooh, a Monster Girl release with sweet Vanilla goodness? I'm happy to see it.
Hmm, a sexroid, huh? So she's either fully, or at least partially mechanical. No idea if that means her parts below there are synthetic or not, but that doesn't really matter.
Because a story about a sexroid beginning to understand emotions better as well as learning about affection and love, what a nice story. I like it.
And considering her 'automatic reaction' at the end, I'd say she's starting to exhibit human like emotions already. (Well, I guess she kind of already was during sex). He's definitely a great guy too, giving her a birthday present even though she's technically a sexroid that was given to him without a birthday, and her reaction to that must have made it all worth it. She definitely looked extremely adorable with that smile.
Chrona had her genitals "upgraded" (page 12, panel 4), so it's safe to assume her lady parts are synthetic, but lifelike (just like the rest of her android body).
Chrona also has a sophisticated self-programming feature, so the ending, though touching, is somewhat ambiguous. Is she beginning to show true emotions? Or has she simply programmed herself to respond in ways that are most likely to please Young Master? That hint of ambiguity gives the story much of its poignancy.
1) "Well Isn't That Cute? ... BUT IT'S RIGHT!"
2) "Ah, What A Fine Day For Science."
In The End, I pick Option 3: "WHY NOT BOTH!"
to demi-humans and supernatural creatures. Instead, this chapter
needs the "Sexbot / Android" tag (which Fakku doesn't have, yet).
