It looks like the series of dots that indicate someone is typing a message in chat. It highlights that most the interactions occurred over cell phone and to show that time has passed. The one on page 7 just happened to be the longest pause in the story.

It's fixed now, but at the time of release, the text bubbles in their phone chat had the words in their sentences overlaid on top of each other, making it look like gibberish instead of text.
