I always love stories where there is a stupid reason why they can't show their powers. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has a time traveler, an alien, and an Eps-er (That's weird, but he clearly says he isn't psychic). The time traveler comes from too far in the future to have believable info. The alien could show powers, but it could change the earth in 10,000 years. And the Eps-er can only activate under very specific circumstances. It is totally worth a read or watch(the first episode alone is bone cracking hilarity)
