The ending reminds me of a strange horror film, Spring (2014).
It's a sensitive Lovecraftian love story (if you can imagine such
a thing), which involves an ageless woman who allows herself
to become pregnant every 20 years, so her body can absorb
the embryo---thus maintaining her immortality through a kind
of prenatal human sacrifice, as it were. Highly recommended.

The chapter is fairly lighthearted, but the ending definitely
carries a hint of horror. See my comment about the movie
Spring (2014), elsewhere on this page.
