You know... I've been thinking. I see a lot of Manga Artist and assistant ero manga. Are the Artist trying to tell us their fantasy or what actually happened to them?
So I am probably going to get down voted for this, but everyone here knows the " 'I can't hold back!' [whomever said that starts fucking the other person in the scene]" scenario counts as 'Forced' right? Like in the real world that's rape, and in bdsm play, that's a consenting non-consent scene which can be ended with a safety word.
I know people are going to downvote this because it ruins the fun, but for me, someone whose had to listen and be supportive to too many friends who've had someone rape them on the pretense of "I cannot hold back" or "you were leading me on", and then watch authorities side with the perpetrator, I would appreciate if "I can't hold back" stories were tagged as forced, if only for my own mental well being. It's just the worst to be reading something that seems vanilla, and then instantly reminds me of bad things others did to my friends, which I am powerless to heal. Despair is a boner killer for me.
Context, really. Different people take these things differently and there's nothing wrong with feeling the way you do. In fact, I appreciate the honesty. For me, most of these "I can't hold back" scenes work the way they do in Hentai because we, as the readers, can kind of see (usually anyway) that the girl really does like him, or is just waiting for him to do something...And usually from their reaction to him 'not being able to hold back' and initiating sex, they start blushing and whatnot, kind of gives off the impression she really wanted/loves him. So...yeah, I kind of doubt the forced tag would be used on releases like this because I think most people envision forced as more violent or...How should I put this...Rapey? Like seriously resisting, crying, begging and pleading for them to stop, stuff like that?
Upvote here for your honesty. Context matters, yes, but the turn of phrase can grate.
Also, let's just insert this here-- if we ain't gonna shame people for being turned on by Metamorphosis, we're not after you for being turned on by this. You're okay if you like this.
I'd like to think my fellow subscribers know how to have fun with a fantasy and not force it on the unwilling. That's my base assumption.
drums, you were very even handed about talking about why it squicked you. You're okay too.
I totally agree. While editing it I kept muttering to myself "this guy is such an ass" and "I really hope this manga-ka doesn't have any female assistants" because as you say, this would be rape irl. Thankfully we have enough variety that these sorts of dudes aren't all we get.
Can I just say that the fact you can edit this without it being to your taste really speaks to your professionalism and commitment to free speech? You guys do good, Romana.
While I like the insight, I think it is interesting to unpack the idea that the manga-ka shouldn't have any female assisstants.
That comment is assuming he acts like his characters, which I think any artist would find repugnant (can you imagine the manga-ka of Metamorphasis?). Or that he even supports and endorses the actions of his characters. I think it is a dis-service to artists to assume they are all the character's they create.
It also assumes a great deal about any female assistants that would work for him. It assumes what kind of fantasies they might have/enjoy, and the types of consent in those fantasies (I would cite 50 Shades for varied fantasy).
Or an unchartible interpretation is that the assumption is saying there is only one type of permissable female fantasy and that it requires explicit informed consent all the time. I don't think you are saying that, but I think works like 50 Shades shows there is a great variety in the fantasies of people, regardless of gender.
@Smuggins. I don't hold anyone's fantasies against them. I can however judge how you treat women or coworkers if they come up in the comics. And I do this A LOT. There's some manga-ka I adore, and others I just think really need to grow up and develop their stories and characters. I don't think ShindoL goes around kicking pregnant women because he drew it. I do suspect some artist really don't know how to deal with women at all or barely speak with them based on the dialog and treatment of women in their stories. Sometimes its just a culture thing. Some readers don't have an issue with it. Others do. This sort of thing isn't my cup of tea. You can draw what you want, and I can chose not to like it and put it in my favorites folder.
@ Eddie: I do love what I do, even if I don't enjoy the storyline to some of the chapters I get. However it's usually very easy to appreciate other things about a chapter when this happens, such as art, and that sort of thing makes it fun to work on just about anything.
Generally have to agree with drumstick00., there ... the "I can't hold back" schtick, while it sometimes seems to work in the H-universe, does not necessarily carry over well IRL.
Notwithstanding, this artist's debut here gets my APPROVAL.
Props for honesty and expressing what may be an unpopular opinion.
However, these stories are fantasy, and for the most part are not big into 'active consent'. While I hear what you are saying, for most of these stories, the lack of resistance is generally seen as consent. There are numerous stories here where the male partner is a much bigger douche, getting off on the lack of consent.
I also think personal experience is going to drive your perception of something. For me, I see the male protagonist as clumsey and over-eager, but that desire is rooted in romatic feelings for the assistant. I focus on the fact that she calls him a dummy and tells him to do what he wants (tacit permission). Manga is full of these kind of narative tropes, as does any narrative medium (movies, tv, books, paintings, etc.). With my background, I assume that is what the artist meant to convey.
Is this the only interpretation? Certainly not (he could be seen as oblivious and forceful) and this is a great discussion of what the same scene can convey to different people. Like others have noted, for me, the context is important (author's intent, narrative conventions, sexual fantasy, etc.). Interesting to read everyone's comments.
Or how someone gets raped but then starts to like it. My enjoyment tends to go downhill from there. That just doesn't turn me on. At the very least, I'd like it if there were more stories that portray rape as horrible.
A word to the protagonist of this story. You mightn't realise the existence of the Internets. Find an image search engine, type in "female mammary glands". If you want to see some action, there are some video sites you can refer to. If you want to depict how it feels, just plagiarise from your favourite ero-literature website.
That ending makes me wonder if that manga is another one this artist actually made...
Also, I guess it helps artists with their work if they can not only see the real thing, but touch and experience it, yeah?
