I think it'd be way more merciful to just tell him or have him witness their relationship since it wouldn't lead to him holding onto false hope/a love that won't bear fruit, but they aren't that kind, I suppose. I'd definitely feel bad if he witnesses the girl he likes with the boss, but it's way better than getting strung along.
