Hoshito Lucky is an AMAZING ARTIST but writing is not his/her/their strong suit! I've read three of his works so far and the impression is consistent: the narrative is always...weird. The pacing, the dialogue, the expressions, and many of the scene choices seem to suggest an ambiguity or conflicted nature where no one seems really committed to whatever is going on. Almost like aspirationally, Lucky wants to do more thoughtful narratives punctuated by sexy scenes but it ends up causing a hiccup in developing the sexual tension. The drawings are LOVELY but at the end of every 16 pages I'm scratching my head in confusion wondering what I missed!
(Short Version this time): "Yo Dawg, That's Deep!"
Seriously, once in a while, a debut work on FAKKU featuring (IMHO) "Deep Shit" is fine, too - specifically, a look at a particular attitude towards sexual activity ("do it because everyone else is", vs "hold out for someone you have feelings for", etc.). I'm not going to speculate right now on which attitude prevails among which segment of the Japanese population but it's IN-teresting that this story's FMC (female character) seemed to want to do it "because she could"; yet in the middle of it all, she suddenly kisses the MC. Opinions may vary as to whether that was a sign of hitherto-unexpressed feelings. And then there's that glance on the last page, too.
It’s interesting how she starts off skipping class and lying about her period and sexual experience but ends up being really honest about her feelings and what she wants sexually.
