Manga has a faster paced storyline, has no fillers whatsoever (obviously) and leaves more to the imagination than anime.
Anime (can have) kickass music, voice acting, large scale animations to show what's happening, sound effects, and the whole lot.
Which one do you prefer, and why? Yes, there's plenty more reasons for viewing either of them, these are just some starter points :D

Really, it depends what I am watching. When I was into Naruto, the Anime did it for me. For Zero no Tsukaima, again, I liked the Anime. In fact, I liked the Vandread Anime and the .HACK//Legends of the Twilight Anime. But that is because the Manga versions of Vandread and .HACK//LotT were completely different than the Anime in both characters AND storyline. For Negima, I prefer the Manga, because the Anime is a steaming pile of irrelevant crap.

it's worth mentioning that the manga version is not always the original version
there are also light novels and visual novels too (more to read, more imagination)

Originals are usually the best story-wise, because it was written by the author as it was meant to be, and became succesful enough without input from other sources. As such, most manga storylines are superior to anime, but not all anime came after a manga source, and not all originals are 100% superior.
I have love hina manga and anime. I'd say that story-wise that the manga was better. Nearly all date-dependent stories (birthdays, valentines, etc) were absent in the anime. The anime, however, had its own charm -- I love the music, for example. And I think the art is also overall better.
Sailor Moon is a classic anime, but have you seen the manga? The art is eye-gougingly fucking horrible. Supposedly the story wasn't particularly better, either, as the manga had the characters blowing up cities and planets (and bringing back the dead) DBZ-style.
The same is also true for the Urotsokidoji manga. Man, that was a huge disappointment. The art was so bad I couldn't stand reading it.
I haven't read FMA manga, but a friend of mine said that its dragging on way too long, and as a result the FMA anime looks better for closing the storyline.
Ranma anime was done on a budget so low that some episodes that came from the manga had art that was unwatchably bad. The changes made by the anime were also retarded in the sense that the changes caused some plot problems, but not all of the changes were bad.

Normally I prefer the Anime version, but there are series (like Naruto or Bleach) that I like to see in both ways

It's always nice seeing something you've read about come to life and it really does depend on the show some anime's have far too many fillers which ruin the overall show so i'm gonna go manga, as the bookworm i am

Ugh... it is hard to choose! Both have good stuff... but I'll have to nudge to the manga... since you're less likely to have fillers that stretch the story along someones.. I dunno... reason why they eat raw eggs at 8:30am while standing on their head balancing 3 plates and watching a soap opera.

I like the anime a bit better than the manga because it gives the characters a voice and uses muic and sound effects to bring out emotins that would be harder to feel for the manga. However the manga is almost always further along than the anime and often continues after the anime has come to an end.

I have to agree with with pretty much everything fatman said. Manga are usually made before anime, and I almost always prefer the manga over the anime. While a good set of voice actors and a good sound track can really pull you into an anime, I hate how anime is always so watered down for the younger audiences.

Probably manga. It has more original material than anime since most large budget anime is based on manga. Manga also has Vagabond, and Vagabond (along with Takehiko Inoue) owns shit. If Takehiko made an anime I'd probably shit my pants with excitement (Slam dunk doesn't count). The only thing that could compare would be a Hiroki Endo anime. Seeing Eden animated would make my year.

I like to get both myself when it comes to anime shows, cause sometimes they can be rather different from one another, can't say I've found one where I like one better then the other, also I tend to read manga books that don't have anime counterparts.

Both are good but, manga tends to have less fillers and more main story related chapters, anime if your lazy to read want sound, voices etc fillers ;_; I treat them as seperate things though

And comedy manga's really make me laugh. If a anime is based on a manga often I like the manga better. It really has more suspense. But soem original anime's are very cool to watch.
Another reason why I like manga's more is because it's portable. I can read it in the train or when im away from home.

I think I've just been spoiled by TV and video games, I've rarely read for fun in the past decade. The last book I read just for fun was the first few chapters of "A People's History of the United States" last summer and before that the last book I read was shortened translation of the Mahabharata probably a year or two ago. I read a lot of books and comics when I was in elementary school(mostly marvel stuff for the comics), but lost interest in that over time and never really got into reading manga.
Long story short, I prefer anime, just don't have much interest in manga.
