Thanks Jake [size=29]Antw0n's Guide to Gundam for Newcomers[/h] Do you want to get into Gundam but have no idea where to start? Well you've come to the right place. This guide is to help aspiring fans of Gundam get their start into this fantastic franchise. Knowing each series To get into Gundam the right way, you need to familiarize yourself with the various series' Gundam has to offer. The guide will give short descriptions of each series, including ratings and more. Each series will also have an indication of the type of show it is (Anime, OVA, or Movie) as well as a personal 1 to 5 rating from me. Note: The 1 to 5 ratings are based on my personal opinion, and other opinions can and will differ. 4 = An all around great series. 2 = Not so great. It's your call if you wanna take the risk. Different Universes There are quite a few different universes in Gundam. Universal Century - The setting of the original Gundam series. Unless listed otherwise in the series guide, a series takes place in the Universal Century. Alternate Universes - Certain Gundam series stray from the Universal Century to create a whole new world. I wont list them all off, as usually there's only 1 Gundam series per alternate universe. Series in Alternate Universes are not related to Universal Century, or any other Century. [size=29]The Series Guide[/h] Spoiler:5 The first Gundam series, and a start of a revolution. Universal Century 0079: The Principality of Zeon has declared its independence from the Earth Federation, and subsequently launched a massive war of independence, a war which has raged in every continent on earth and in nearly every space colony and lunar settlement. The Zeon have the upper hand through their use of a revolutionary new type of weapon, their humanoid like mobile suits. When a Zeon recon team disobey mission orders and begin attacking Side 7 its citizens stumble across the Federations latest weapon: the Gundam. With the aid of Earth Federation soldiers stationed aboard the MS carrier White Base the newly formed crew of refugees set out to change the course of the One Year War — or die trying. 5 It is U.C.0087, seven years after the end of the One Year War. After the events of Operation Stardust (see Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory), the Earth Federation establishes an elite counter-insurgency division called the Titans to hunt down the remaining pockets of Zeon remnants. The Titans become overzealous in their mission, start resorting to brutal methods to achieive their goals, and become nothing more than ruthless tyrants with an ambition to rule the Earth Sphere. Two anti-Titans resistance groups, the AEUG (Anti-Earth Union Group) and their earth-bound counterparts Karaba, form to unite the various existing small forces in the struggle against Titans. Kamille Bidan is a troubled civilian seventeen-year old from Side 7's Green Noa 1 colony. His personal resentment towards the Titans results in him joining the AEUG. 3 As the continuation of Zeta Gundam, this series once again follows the story of the AEUG battleship Argama after Zeta's final episode. To fight off the Axis Zeon, now called the Neo Zeon, Captain Bright Noa recruits a group of teenage junk collectors led by the loudmouthed but powerful Newtype Judau Ashta to pilot the Argama's mobile suits. Now sporting a line up of the behemoth Double Zeta Gundam and the returning Zeta Gundam, Gundam Mk-II and Hyaku Shiki, the group is nicknamed the Gundam Team. 5 Universal Century 0083: Zeon Intelligence has identified a prototype Gundam designed for nuclear attack under development by Anaheim Electronics. A former Zeon ace and a small band of Principality soldiers are dispatched to Earth to capture the Gundam as part of Operation Stardust. When the Zeon successfully make off with the prototype the Earth Federation assigns the mobile suit carrier Albion to locate and recover the missing unit. 4 Universal Century 0079: The Jungles of Southeast Asia. During the One Year War, the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon are fighting a brutal guerrilla war for control of the area and its resources. Zeon’s best hope for victory in the region rests with an experimental mobile armor, the Apsalus and its pilot, Aina Sahalin. Meanwhile the Earth Federal Army, which has been fighting the Zeon in the region, receive reinforcements in the form of Ensign Shiro Amada, newly named commander of the 08th MS Team. 4 December, Universal Century 0079. Zeon intelligence has identified a prototype Federation Gundam under development in a Federation base in the Arctic.The Cyclops Team, an elite Zeon MS commando team is dispatched to destroy the prototype, but before they can accomplish their mission the Gundam is launched into space. When the Gundam turns up in a Federation R&D base inside the neutral space colony Side 6 , the Principality launches a covert operation to destroy the Gundam. When the raid fails, the Zeon prepares to launch a nuclear strike against the colony as punishment for siding with the Federation unless the last remaining commando can eliminate the Gundam. 3 Synopsis hidden to avoid spoilers. Watch only after watching Mobile Suit Gundam, and Zeta. 3 The greatly weakened Earth Federation comes under attack by the BESPA forces of the spaceborn Zanscare Empire; only the AEUG-like League Militaire stands in their way. The mass-produced Victory Gundam is the League Militaire's secret weapon against the invading BESPA. 2 The story of Gundam F91 revolves around teenage space colonist Seabook Arno, his girlfriend Cecily Fairchild, and the efforts of the Crossbone Vanguard militia, led by Cecily's grandfather Meitzer Ronah, to establish an aristocracy known as "Cosmo Babylonia". [size=10]Originally planned as a full-length television series, Gundam F91 hit a production snag due to staff disputes, and the project was stopped after the screenplays for the first thirteen episodes were written. It was then decided that what was made of the show would be condensed into a theatrical feature film. Condensing a story originally intended to be told over the course of fifty half-hour episodes into less than two hours of screen time required much of the original story to be cut.[/h] 4 The story begins in UC 0001, at the very beginning of human space colonization, with the Laplace Incident, a major event that influences the course of human history forever. The main story takes place in UC 0096, three years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack and seventeen years after the One Year War. NOTE: This series is currently ongoing. âˆ€ Gundam (AKA Turn A Gundam) Anime, Correct Century Mobile Fighter G Gundam Anime, Future Century Mobile Suit Gundam Wing Anime, After Colony After War Gundam X Anime [size=10]I haven't seen After War Gundam X, so I can't rate it. My estimated rating would be 3 out of 5.[/h] Taking place 15 years after the 7th Space War, the surviving 98 million residents of Earth try to make a living as best they can in the post apocalyptic landscape. Mobile Suits and weapons left over from the war fall into the hands of civilians as well as other organizations on the planet. In an effort to keep the past from repeating itself, Jamil Neate brings together a crew of Vultures to search for Newtypes and protect them from being exploited. As they try to carry out this task, an old government rises from the ashes to try and unify the Earth as other forces slowly fan the flames of war once more between the newly formed New United Nations Earth and the Space Revolutionary Army. Now the crew of the Freeden face a multitude of enemies as they try to prevent another catastrophic war. 1 This series begins with a war between Earth and the colonies that is similar to the One Year War of the original Gundam series. On one side is the Earth Alliance, and on the opposite is the space colonies that form ZAFT (Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty). Mankind is divided over human genetic engineering, with normal humans known as 'Naturals' and the genetically altered humans known as 'Coordinators'. Like the original series, ZAFT has a head start on mobile suit design, the Earth Alliance quickly catches up with its five prototype Gundam’s. With ZAFT having stolen four of the prototypes, young pilot Kira Yamato takes the Strike Gundam and is forced to fight his old friend Athrun Zala. Little do they know that there are sinister forces at work that go far beyond their worst nightmares... 1 Gundam SEED Destiny is the sequel to Gundam SEED and the second Gundam series to be set in the Cosmic Era timeline. Synopsis hidden to avoid spoilers. Watch only after watching Gundam SEED. [size=10](If you would really want to.)[/h] 1 In the year 2307 AD, fossil fuels have all but vanished and the distribution of energy is unbalanced. Humanity now relies on three large-scale solar power systems controlled by three multinational power blocks: the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations (Union), the Human Reform League (HRL), and the Advanced European Union (AEU). With this nearly inexhaustible source of energy benefiting only these three powers and their allies, constant warfare erupted around the globe among minor countries for precious fuels and energy. Countries whose economy relied solely on the sale of fossil fuels were plunged into poverty and some even believed that the solar power system threatened the "promised land of God", resulting in the twenty year-long Solar Wars. Such a chaotic reality has lead to the creation of a paramilitary organization in possession of four highly advanced humanoid mobile suits called "Gundams" and a mysterious technology known as the "GN Drive". They call themselves Celestial Being, and their goal is nothing less than the complete eradication of war through the use of war itself. 5 Mobile Suit Gundam AGE takes place over the course of a century during a "One Hundred Year War". Mankind had migrated to space colonies several centuries ago, with wars on Earth having long ended. Suddenly during the Advanced Generation (AG) Year 101 an Unknown Enemy (UE) appears and starts to attack Earth and colonies starting a full-scale war. They destroy the space colony "Angel" in a disaster later referred to as "The Day the Angel Fell". In AG 108 the UE attack a once peaceful colony known as "Orvan". Flit Asuno, a seven-year-old boy at the time, had his mother killed in this attack. Before she died, she gave him the Asuno family heirloom—the "AGE Device " memory unit. Using plans hidden within this unit, Flit begins to develop the mobile suit "Gundam", humanity's last hope. What order should I watch? For the best Gundam experience, most people will say production order. Otherwise, here's my suggested order for you to watch: First start with Mobile Suit Gundam. It's the first series, and the best way to get into it. Afterwords, move on to Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. You could also watch Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ after Zeta, as it takes place very shortly after Zeta, but is considered optional. At this point you could watch Char's Counterattack, for a direct continuation of Amuro and Char's story, or watch Stardust Memory, 08th MS Team, or War in the Pocket, which are all side-stories, for more on the One Year War era. Other series in the Universal Century timeline don't have much to do with the originals- they can be watched at practically any time. The Alternate Universes can be watched ANY time- hell, you could start with them if you want. They have nothing to do with the original story aside from the fact that their are Gundams. Well I understand that part, I played Inazuma Eleven 1,2, and 3 (The DS games w/ minor translations), got hooked, watched the anime, then watched AGE. I feel the character designs "different" but its [size=14]not[/h] that I hate it. They've got good gundams too so it was OK for me. AGE too can give off a "why do you have to die?" feeling.

Well, I watched the last three episodes, but at least I can say that its ending is pretty much the "the power of love and friendship shall always prevail!" kind, and honestly, I'm not a fan of that kind of ending. Plus there are so many ripoffs of older Gundam series, like say, AGE-2 whatever that looks like Crossbone and AGE-3 whatever that is pretty much failed [Q]ant.

So some might shoot me for this, but which ones of the main series are dubbed? I've been planning to actually start the main series for some time, especially after player The Dynasty Warriors Gundam games. In the game, all the characters are dubbed, but hell that probably means nothing, though I know Seed/Destiny was dubbed.

Bottom Line, I'd prefer to watch most of it dubbed, but if not enough of it is dubbed, I'm fine with subbed, just don't want to switch dub/sub every series.

But anyway, to save you the trouble of having to look for it yourself, the following Universal Century Gundams are available in dub (in chronological order of the timeline):

0080: War in the Pocket
0083: Stardust Memory
Mobile Suit Z Gundam
Char's Counterattack
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn (that's if you really wanna hear fucking Sasuke Uchiha)
Mobile Suit Gundam F91
G-Saviour

The only important one that's missing is ZZ, unfortunately.

Just letting you know, however: a lot of the original voice actors couldn't make it for later DWG games.

Technically, yes and no. Unicorn is considered the last of Early UC, while F91 and Victory are considered Late UC. So late, in fact, that you can watch them standalone. This pic should shed some more light on it (this may or may not be official):

The events in crossbone happens in UC 0133, ten years after the events of F91.

and lol, I just realized that GunPla builders also happened in Anno Domini Way before Gundam 00.

Sony actually planned to make a Gundam Movie in 2013 or near Future.

if it's an adaptation of the 0079 Gundam,they better work with Tomino and Sunrise so it'll stay faithfully to UC fans.

but if it's a new one,hope it's not gonna blows like G Saviour.

If only Gundam X was popular like them it'll get am extended ver. (or even Under the Moonlight, mmmmhhmm DAT Belphagor) I'll just satisfy myself with their games... now waiting for the next GGen n GvG Series

Oh yes. I remember them G Gundam (and the shining fingers LOL) and Gundam Wing (I remember Sandrock was my favorite).

If I ever find time again to watch lenghty anime, I'll refer to this list and watch gundam myself.

I saw Gundam AGE after exams and I thought the series was ok from episode 12 until Kio got the FX Gundam. Mostly because angry Flit was cool to watch, and also we finally have a Gundam pilot who is also the authority figure in the series. But Kio and the FX... it's like taking away all the parts of Kira that make him a good character and leaving him as a hollow shell of "Thou shall not kill". Even Destiny Kira still kills people in self defense and to protect others.

I just finished rewatching Seed/Destiny, and while it reaffirms my belief that Shinn is a bitch, it got me wondering. How the hell do they pilot Gundams with that kind of control set up? I know they have 2 peddles for the feet, and some kind of control for each of the hands. But even with advance programming help and Co-Ordinator/seed abilities, they way the pilots move the Gundams is fucking space magic.

This question is also for any of the Gundam Series, not just Seed/Destiny.
