Bang Zoom says "anime is going to die."

Bang Zoom Entertainment has fall in sales where they feel it's time to take some measure to get back on top of this. They have decide to issue a 1-year warning that if the whole downloading of free anime cease including fansubs and start buying their product; the C.E.O. says and I quote, " I can guarantee you that this time next year, Bang Zoom won’t be bringing you anymore English language versions of it." In short terms, the company planning to shut down everything they do if they don't get their way. All of this sound like the whole "music industry vs. file sharing" case, so will they success where the music industries give up at?

okay. im in a bit of a panic mode here. the only thing i want to know. will this in ANYWAY effect funimation and the american realease of evangelion 2.0?


and by panic mode i mean im hyperventilating and freaking out and typing at light speed one my blog now.

I don't think anime is going to die, but I think just like the music industry your going to see companies releasing anime in the US shrink to a small few. I work at Best Buy and we just ended a promotion where we cut anime titles by 50% to make room for our expanded Blu-ray section (Cowboy Bepob box set $16.99!) It'll happen not just because of the downloading of episodes illegally (although that's a big part of it), but think about, how much good anime is really out there? and how much of it is really worth your hard earned money? Don't feel bad though, the industry has gotten a little bloated. More below

It used to be (going back to the 90's and 80's) only a small stream of anime made it over. Usually several years after their run on j-TV. Most of it wasn't good, but American viewers didn't have a lot to compare it too. It was just awesome to see animated characters bleeding, in serious stories, and occasionally nude. All things you never saw in US animation.

Then came the Toonami block. Started out with classics like Voltron and Robotech, but the big push came with the Sailormoon, DragonBall Z, Gundam Wing block. Think about that, Sailormoon, DragonBall Z, Gundam Wing, same channel one after the other. A venerable history lesson on 90's anime airing 5 times a week right after school.

More anime followed, all good, the cream of the crop from the previous 25 years that never made it to our shores, DVDs of the series started flying off the shelves. Anime became one of the next 'big' things and soon every anime was being brought over, good or bad. The problem of course was, this was the cream of the crop. Not of the last year, but of the last several decades, so inevitably the well dried up.

Simply put, there isn't enough good anime to go around anymore. Think about it, there's maybe one or two really good shows each season. Maybe 6-8 the whole year? That's not enough to support a whole industry.

There are lots of series out I like to watch, but only a few I want to own. Most anime I watch and that's it, I never see it again. Why should pay $19.99 for something I'm only going to view once? That's why I think the future of anime in the US is through websites like Crunchy Roll and Youtube. Similar to how music ended up finding it's life on itunes. You go on the site, you watch the advertisements, and then you get to enjoy the show for free without having to pay anything or break the law. And if you really like it, you can pick it up when it comes out on DVD.

The only reason why i liked Bang Zoom is because Connor Obrien did 2 dubbings for fun there.

Bang Zoom to Cease Anime Dubbing in 2011 Without Fan Support


are they ever going to realize that their primary anime fanboy market loathes dubs to begin with? It all seems like wasted money, imo. Sure there's some people out there who prefer dubs, but it seems like too much to do for such a small payoff.

And we care about there dubbing since when? Idle threats are idle. That's like VIZ saying they'll disappear if it doesn't stop. Doing us a favor is a bad thing now?

Kinda little upset, I mean if they stop making dubs that's fine, but if they run into a problem with sales and can no longer continue releasing anything new, just subbed, then I'll be somewhat upset.

Don't get me wrong some dubs are great. (I think Johnny Yong Bosch is a great fucking voice actor.Ichigo, Vash, Lelouch, Emil, P4 MC, Adachi, Kiba, Renton, Nero, and Kaneda are just some of the voices he's done.) All I'm saying is if they decide to stop doing it then oh well. I can live without listening to anime in English.

Phew.. thank god I don't like dubs..

Because right now I don't really care if Bang Zoom closes down. It's not like you won't get to see your anime anymore.. Just get used to reding subs then

Well that's not surprising.. well the only English dub i liked is code geass...
the rest are subs
